Vietnam health ministry reports 7,913 new coronavirus infections

27.07.2021 (Reuters) - HANOI - Vietnam reported 7,913 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, the fifth straight day the country has recorded more than 7,000 cases as it battles its largest and most difficult outbreak yet, the health ministry said.

Vietnam locks down capital Hanoi for 15 days as cases rise

24.07.2021 The Asahi Shimbun (AP) - HANOI - Vietnam announced a 15-day lockdown in the capital Hanoi starting Saturday as a coronavirus surge spread from the southern Mekong Delta region.

U.S. donates 3 million more COVID-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam

22.07.2021 (Reuters) - WASHINGTON, July 22 (Reuters) - The U.S. government will send 3 million more doses of the Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccine to Vietnam on Thursday, bringing total donations to the Southeast Asian country to 5 million, a White House official said.

The next batch of shots is due to arrive in Vietnam this weekend as the country battles its worst coronavirus outbreak of the pandemic.

U.S., Vietnam Reach Agreement on Currency

Intel and Samsung impacted as COVID closes electronics factories in Vietnam

Saigon Hi-Tech Park, a Vietnamese electronics factory complex, has been forced to shut down and require workers to live on-site after more than 750 employees tested positive for COVID-19.

The park is home to many high-tech companies – including an Intel chip assembly and test plant, and a Samsung factory.

Samsung, which makes over half of its smartphones in Vietnam, has closed three of its 16 factories after 46 cases were found among its employees, and reduced its available workforce from 7000 to 3000. [read more]

Vietnam receives two more trains for Ho Chi Minh City metro

Vietnam has received two more trains for Ho Chi Minh City’s Metro Line No 1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien). These are the sixth and seventh trains that arrived in the city’s Khanh Hoi port, with six carriages in total.

Workers 'living and sleeping' at Apple factories in Vietnam

It's been revealed that roughly 175,000 tech factory workers in the northern provinces of Bac Ninh and Bac Giang in Vietnam, as well as in Ho Chi Minh City in the south, currently live in or close to their workplaces, sleeping in metal bunk beds or tents on the factory floor.

Until April this year, Vietnam had got off relatively lightly, but has since experienced a rise in infections. [read more]

07.07.2021 (Daily Mail) - Nine million people in Ho Chi Minh City have been ordered into lockdown, state media said Wednesday, as the commercial hub struggles to contain Vietnam's most serious Covid-19 outbreak so far.

Beginning in the early hours of Friday, residents will be mandated to stay at home for two weeks after 8,000 cases were recorded in the city during the latest virus wave.

Saudi Arabia suspends UAE flights due to virus variant

Saudi Arabia has said it is suspending flights to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ethiopia and Vietnam to protect against a coronavirus variant.

Japan to give 6 million doses of vaccines to Taiwan, 5 SE Asia nations

25.06.2021 (Cape Breton Post) - TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan said on Friday it would send 2 million additional doses of AstraZeneca Plc's COVID-19 vaccine to Taiwan and Vietnam and arrangements were being made to send 1 million doses each to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Japan donated 1.24 million doses to Taiwan and 1 million to Vietnam this month and plans to share an additional 1 million doses each with the two. [read more]

Vietnam receives 500,000 Sinopharm doses from China for select groups

Vietnam Company Could Make Covid Shots in Tech Transfer Deal

13.06.2021 Nguyen Xuan Quynh (Bloomberg) -  Vietnam’s health ministry said a local company is expected to manufacture Covid-19 vaccines after negotiating a technology transfer deal with an unidentified U.S. producer.

New arrest in case of smuggling deaths of 39 Vietnamese

Eleven southwest China dams have left much of the Lower Mekong region, with its population of 60 million, dry since 2019, according to data from the Stimson Center in Washington. More Cambodians, Laotians and Vietnamese have been killed this year by flooding than from the coronavirus pandemic.

Flooding in Vietnam has killed at least 36 people so far this month, up to October 14, a number that will most likely rise as Tropical Storm Nangka continues to batter the central provinces.

Environmentalism is growing in the region. Some of the largest protests witnessed in Vietnam’s recent history came after the toxic oil spill of the Formosa steel plant in 2016, which destroyed waterways across several central provinces. [read more]
