Vietnam - Busse statt Besserungsanstalt für Prostituierte
11.10.2012 (Neue Zürcher Zeitung) (sda/afp) Vietnams Behörden ändern ihren Umgang mit Prostituierten. Etwa 900 Prostituierte würden kommendes Jahr aus staatlichen Besserungsanstalten entlassen, berichtete die staatliche Zeitung «Tanh Nien» am Donnerstag. Grundlage sei eine Gesetzesreform, die im Juli 2013 in Kraft trete.
«Das ist eine grosse Veränderung in der Sichtweise, wie mit Prostitution umzugehen ist», sagte der stellvertretende Chef der Behörde zur Vorbeugung sozialer Untugenden, Le Duc Hien. «Das heisst aber nicht, dass wir Prostitution offiziell anerkennen.«
Kritik von Menschenrechtsorganisation
An Stelle eines Aufenthaltes in einer Besserungsanstalt müssen Prostituierte dem Zeitungsbericht zufolge eine Strafe von gut 222 Franken zahlen, wenn sie von den Behörden aufgegriffen werden. In Vietnam gibt es schätzungsweise 30'000 Prostituierte, insbesondere in den grossen Städten.
Trotz internationaler Kritik unterhält Vietnam seit Jahren Besserungsanstalten für Prostituierte und Drogenabhängige. Die US-Menschenrechtsorganisation Human Rights Watch hatte in einem Bericht vergangenes Jahr kritisiert, dass Drogenabhängige in den staatlichen Einrichtungen Zwangsarbeit leisten müssten.

It is almost 67 years to the day when the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence was revealed on September 2, 1945. The document served to announce, without doubt, Vietnam as a free and independent nation, no longer subject to French or Japanese rule. Among the first words written are, “All men are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights; among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”--borrowed directly from the US Declaration of Independence. The author of this document? None other than the former leading light of Vietnam’s Communist Party, President Ho Chi Minh. It is perhaps not surprising that the motto of Vietnam --“Independence, Freedom, and Happiness” -- brings to mind the inalienable rights. [lesen]

Addressing the launching ceremony, which was held in capital Hanoi, Dinh The Huynh, secretary of the CPV's Central Committee and head of the Popularization and Education Commission, said that the launching of the Chinese version will contribute to strengthening public broadcasting of the country's external information in the international integration process and boosting friendly cooperation between Vietnam and China. China editor's suicide sparks web debate
24.08.2012 (BBC) The suicide of a senior editor working for China's Communist Party newspaper has sparked strong reaction from Chinese cultural and media circles and on the internet. Xu Huaiqian, 44, was editor-in-chief for the Dadi (Earth) supplement of the People's Daily. According to its official microblog, he jumped to his death on 22 August. The official People's Daily microblog said he had taken time off because of depression and had sought medical help. Xu Huaiqian was born in 1968 and graduated from the prestigious Peking University in 1989.
In an interview he gave before his death, Xu Huaiqian was quoted as saying: "My pain is I dare to think, but I don't dare to speak out; if I dare to speak out, I don't dare to write it down, and if I dare to write it down, there is no place to publish" [lesen...]

Over the weekend China’s foreign ministry summoned an American diplomat to express “strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition” to a statement issued by the state department on August 3rd.
Tensions in the sea have mounted this year, especially between China and the Philippines on the one hand, and between China and the Vietnam on the other. Although there has not been a serious armed clash in the sea since 1988, and none is likely now, there are worries that in the current climate some low-level confrontation might escalate by accident.
