Deux peintures sur soie de Mai-Thu dévoilées à Besançon

French museum hosts exhibition on painter Mai Trung Thứ

The exhibition is working with the theme Écho d’un Vietnam Rêvé (Echo of a Dreamed Việt Nam) with assist from the late artist’s daughter Mai Lan Phương.

Byrne Tran was only 13 months old when he and his family found themselves aboard a sinking boat off the coast of Vietnam.

Ninety-nine Vietnamese refugees were on board the overloaded 14-metre boat, which had been drifting for days without adequate food or water for its passengers. The group was attempting to flee their homeland and its communist regime. [read more]

Police swooped in raids against suspected human traffickers on Monday in the German states of Berlin, Hamburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. Der Schwerpunkt des Einsatzes lag mit 16 Objekten in Berlin. Dort wurde eine der beiden Hauptverdächtigen, eine Vietnamesin, festgenommen.

L’arrivée des vols internationaux à l’aéroport Noi Bai de Hanoï va être suspendue dès ce mardi, a déclaré l’aviation civile vietnamienne. Le pays fait face à une nouvelle vague de cas de Covid-19 sur son sol.

En parallèle, la suspension des arrivées de vols internationaux déjà décidée la semaine dernière à l’aéroport international Tan Son Nath de Ho Chi Minh-ville restera finalement en place jusqu’au 14 juin, selon l’administration de l’aviation civile. 49 Migranten vor belgischer Küste gerettet

Das Boot mit Menschen, die größtenteils aus Vietnam stammen, sei während einer Überfahrt nach Großbritannien auf dem Ärmelkanal in Not geraten, teilte die Staatsanwaltschaft Brügge mit. Das Boot sei demnach wahrscheinlich in Frankreich gestartet, die Untersuchung dauere allerdings noch an.

Dozens of migrants rescued off the coast of Belgium

19.05.2021 (euronews) - Belgian authorities have rescued 49 migrants off the coast on Wednesday morning. Most of them are of Vietnamese origin, and probably seeking to reach England by boat, according to Bruges' prosecutor.

The group of people were brought back to the shore in Zeebrugge "in good health, but some showed slight signs of hypothermia," it said in a statement. "We suspect that the boat came from the French coast."

Authorities said that Vietnamese migrants en route to England usually head to the coast. The smuggling routes often have them fly by plane to Moscow, before being transported by land. [read more]

Young people on a mission in north-eastern Vietnam for the Lunar New Year

Mai Khoi, who became a pop sensation in her mid-20s there, winning the Vietnam Television 2010 Album of the Year Award, has been living here with her Australian husband in self-imposed exile since November.

The 38-year-old is the second scholar in residence at Pitt through the Scholars at Risk program at the University Center for International Studies, which is partnered with the Institute of International Education’s Artist Protection Fund, supporting threatened artists by placing them at welcoming institutions in safe countries for a full year. 23.01.2021 (DLF) - In London sind vier Mitglieder einer Schleuserbande zu langen Haftstrafen verurteilt worden. Nach Überzeugung des Gerichts waren sie dafür verantwortlich, dass in Großbritannien in einem Lastwagen 39 Menschen erstickt sind.

UK court sentences seven for Essex lorry deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants

23.01.2021 Terry Ang (Jurist) - The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales on Friday sentenced seven persons to a total of 92 years in prison after their failed smuggling attempt resulted in the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants.

The bodies were found 10 hours later by Maurice Robinson, the driver of the smuggling operation. He had been paid £25,000 by Ronan Hughes, one of the two ringleaders, to collect the container after its delivery to the port of Purfleet in Essex. [read more]

A veteran Houston police officer was federally charged Tuesday in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol after agents said they searched his phone and found deleted selfies taken inside the building.

Sie hatten viel Geld gezahlt, um illegal nach Großbritannien zu gelangen. Doch die Reise der 39 Menschen aus Vietnam endete mit dem Tod. Ihre Körper waren leblos in einem Kühllaster in einem Industriegebiet in der Grafschaft Essex nahe London gefunden worden.

Nun verurteilte ein britisches Gericht zwei Männer wegen Totschlags und Menschenhandels. Das Strafmaß wurde noch nicht genannt, doch den Verurteilten, einem 43-Jährigen und einem 24-Jährigen, droht lebenslange Haft. Essex lorry deaths: Two people smugglers found guilty for deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants

21.12.2020 Joe Middleton (The Independent) - Two people-smugglers are facing life in jail after being found guilty of the manslaughter of 39 Vietnamese migrants.

Following a 10-week trial, Romanian ringleader Gheorghe Nica, 43, from Basildon, and lorry driver Eamonn Harrison, 24, from County Down, were found guilty on Monday of 39 counts of manslaughter.

The migrants, aged between 15 and 44, suffocated in a sealed refrigeration container being transported from Zeebrugge to Purfleet. They were found in the back of a trailer in Essex on October 23 last year. [read more]

The diocese’s vicar general, Father John Bosco Hoang Van Chinh, announced the suspension of Father Truyen, who claims to be an exorcist.

Exhibition illustrates what life was like for Vietnamese refugees in Hong Kong camps

27.10.2020 Ji Siqi (SCMP) - Ho-yin has curated an installation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from paintings and photographs created by detainees during their time spent in detention centres.

It was in 2016 that Leung Ho-yin first heard about the Vietnamese boatpeople who had sought refuge in Hong Kong. Fast forward four years, the 27-year-old is curating an arts exhibition on them.

Titled “Nàng Tự Do”, meaning “Miss Freedom”, the show consists of paintings, photos and other historical documents that trace a hidden corner of Hong Kong’s modern history – life in detention centres accommodating the Vietnamese who had fled to the city in the 1980s and 90s after the Vietnam war. 18.09.2020 (VOA) - Tropical storm Noul made landfall Friday in central Vietnam, killing at least one person and triggering heavy rain in the central parts of the country.

State-run media report the storm hit the tourist city of Danang and veered north to Thua Thien Hue province before entering Laos around midday Friday, by then having weakened to a tropical depression.

Taiwan arrests 33 Vietnamese stowaways

16.09.2020 (The Standard) - Taiwan Coast Guard and police have arrested another five Vietnamese stowaways who went into hiding on a beach in Pingtung county, a day after they jumped from a Taiwanese fishing boat to avoid arrest.

The latest additions meant that a total of 33 Vietnamese have been arrested after smugglers tried to get them into Taiwan from China on the Hengchun-registered fishing vessel Chin Shun Man early Tuesday. Of the 33 Vietnamese arrested, 18 were men and 15 were women. [read more]

Erste Haftstrafen wegen des Todes von Migranten im Kühllaster

Initiative in Mönchengladbach: Cap-Anamur-Flüchtling hilft Baby-Hospital

28.08.2020 (RP Online) - Mönchengladbach - Der Mönchengladbacher Van Ri Nguyen verließ 1981 als Bootsflüchtling das kommunistische Vietnam mit seiner Frau und den damals vier Kindern. Seitdem hat er in Deutschland eine neue Heimat gefunden.

Weil er und seine Familie vor fast 40 Jahren in höchster Not gerettet wurden, setzt sich Van Ri Nguyen seit Jahrzehnten für Menschen ein, die Hilfe benötigen. Nun hat der Mönchengladbacher erneut 3500 Euro für Kinder und Mütter in Bethlehem gesammelt. Das Geld stammt von Mitgliedern der Vinzenz-von-Paul-Gemeinschaft, die von der vietnamesischen Gemeinde im Bistum Aachen gegründet wurde. Pham is the top attorney at ICE in his role as principal legal adviser. He was born in Saigon and came to the United States as a refugee in the 1970s, according to his government biography. Pham became a U.S. citizen in 1985, following a decade in the country. [read more]

Asleep at the Wheel: Cargo Ship Runs Aground in Philippines

13.08.2020 by Mike Schuler (gCaptain) - A Vietnamese-flagged cargo ship has run aground in the Philippines after the officer on watch fell asleep, the Philippines Coast Guard reports.

The 4,373 dwt MV Globe 6 was sailing from Chi Minh City to Davao City with a cargo of rice when the it grounded between Nagubat Island and Liwagao Island in Philippines’ Antique province when it grounded, the Coast Guard.

Demolition of Historic Vietnam Cathedral Is Underway

Paddock (NYT) - BANGKOK — The historic Bui Chu Cathedral in Vietnam, a 135-year-old church considered by many an architectural gem, is being demolished to make room for a bigger cathedral despite last-ditch efforts to save it. A high fence has been erected around the building, and demolition will most likely be completed by early next month.

“This would amount to an irremediable loss of heritage for Vietnam, for the world, and for the Catholic Church itself,” said Martin Rama, a top economist with the World Bank who has worked to save the building. “Indeed, the ancient Bui Chu Cathedral embodies an amazing intersection of culture, history, and architecture.” [read more]

The Truong Xuan, captained by Pham Ngoc Luy, had fled Vietnam two days earlier with 3,628 refugees on board, just in time to avoid being captured by North Vietnamese forces during the “Fall of Saigon”.

After transferring the passengers from the Truong Xuan, Olsen piloted the Clara Maersk onwards to Hong Kong. Two days later, the captain radioed for an urgent air pick up of four of the refugees: a sickly newborn, her two-year-old brother and mother, and a woman with a ruptured appendix. 22.04.2020 By Gaiutra Bahadur (NPR) - Author Nguyen Phan Que Mai is a poet and world traveler whose first novel, The Mountains Sing, is about four generations of a Vietnamese family enduring many hardships — something she understands well.

The 47-year-old writer was born in North Vietnam, but grew up in a small village in the South, destitute, hungry and horrified by the ruins of war. "As a child, I saw so many people with missing limbs," she recalls. "I saw mothers without children, people committing suicide because their loved ones didn't come back."

The total number of deaths in that famine has never been confirmed, as the history is still being written. After the famine of the 1940s, Que Mai also fictionalizes the Viet Minh government's brutal land reform of the 1950s, when her grandfather was beaten, put in prison and died "because of the policy of the Viet Minh at that time, to punish the landowners." Given his high-ranking positions, he was certain that if he stayed, he would have been sent to a re-education camp where he would have been subject to grueling hours of labor, poor health care and insufficient food. Vietnam says all patients infected with coronavirus cured

13.02.2020 Phuong Nguyen (Reuters) - HANOI - Vietnam has quarantined a community of 10,000 people near the capital, Hanoi, for 20 days because of fears the coronavirus could spread there, two local officials told Reuters on Thursday.

The rural commune of Son Loi, in the northern Vietnameseprovince of Vinh Phuc, 44 km (27 miles) from Hanoi, is home to11 of the 16 coronavirus cases in the Southeast Asian country, including a three-month-old baby.

“Over 10,000 residents of the commune will not be permitted to leave for the next 20 days, starting from today,” the second of the two the officials told Reuters on Thursday. [read more]

Vietnam total confirmed coronavirus cases rise to 12

06.02.2020 (Reuters) - HANOI - Vietnam said on Thursday it has confirmed two new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 12.

06.02.2020 Marina Mai (taz) - BERLIN - Einige Staaten schließen aus Angst die Grenze zu China, Vietnam hält sie gezwungenermaßen offen. Dabei gibt es eine hohe Dunkelziffer an Infizierten.

Auch Chinas Nachbarstaat Vietnam kämpft gegen das neuartige Coronavirus. Wie im zen­tral­chinesischen Wuhan wird dort innerhalb weniger Tage ein Krankenhaus gebaut. Das 11 Millionen Dollar teure Militärkrankenhaus in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt mit 500 Betten, dessen Bau am Wochenende begann, soll noch diesen Monat fertig werden. Ein noch größeres Feldlazarett soll in Hanoi entstehen.

Vietnam to quarantine 950 people returning from China at military camps

04.02.2020 (Reuters) - HANOI - Vietnam has assigned the military to quarantine 950 Vietnamese returning from China, where the coronavirus epidemic has killed more than 420 people, state media reported on Tuesday.

Einer der Männer wurde bereits aus dem Krankenhaus entlassen, die anderen weisen schwere Symptome auf. Darüber hinaus gibt es in Chinas südlichem Nachbarland über 100 Verdachtsfälle. Beobachter gehen allerdings von einer hohen Dunkelziffer aus.

Philippines reports 1st virus death outside of China

02.02.2020 (The Asahi Shimbun) - BEIJING--The Philippines on Sunday reported the first death from a new virus outside of China, where authorities delayed the opening of schools in the worst-hit province and tightened quarantine measures in a city that allow only one family member to venture out to buy supplies.

The Philippine Department of Health said a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan was admitted on Jan. 25 after experiencing fever, cough, and sore throat. He developed severe pneumonia, and in his last few days, “the patient was stable and showed signs of improvement, however, the condition of the patient deteriorated within his last 24 hours resulting in his demise." Vietnam bans all flights to and from China over coronavirus

02.02.2020 (Nikkei Asian Review) - HANOI (Reuters) -- Vietnam declared a public health emergency over the coronavirus epidemic on Saturday and said it would halt all flights to and from China.

All permits granted for flights between Vietnam and China, including Hong Kong and Macau as well as self-ruled Taiwan which China claims as its territory, have been revoked until further notice, the government said in a statement.

But Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said in a later statement that it had spoken to the Vietnamese government and had the ban on flights to the island lifted. [read more]

30.01.2020 (Health24) - A man from Wuhan, the Chinese city that's the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, apparently transmitted the infection to his son living in Vietnam, a new case report shows.

The report, published on January 28 in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlights how the respiratory illness can spread person-to-person, experts say.

In the new case report, physicians led by Dr Thuong Nguyen at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam said that a 65-year-old man from Wuhan appears to have transmitted the coronavirus to his 27-year-old son living just outside of Ho Chi Minh City. [read more]

Czech Citizen in Vietnam under observation for new Coronavirus

26.01.2020 Ruth Fraňková (Radio Prague International) - Twelve people, including a Czech citizen, have been put in isolation in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang and are under observation for the new coronavirus, the Vietnamese news site Tuoi tre news wrote on Sunday.

Vietnam confirms two cases of SARS-like coronavirus

23.01.2020 (Medical Xpress) - A Chinese man living in Ho Chi Minh City was infected by his father who travelled to Vietnam on January 13 from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus.

The father was hospitalised on January 17 with a high fever, days before his son showed symptoms, health officials said.

"The patients have shown signs of good recovery, (their) fever has reduced and they can eat now," Doctor Nguyen Ngoc Sang said Thursday at a meeting at Ho Chi Minh City's Cho Ray hospital.

Vietnam's deputy health minister urged all precautions to avoid any further spread. [read more]

Durch die Eastern Avenue des Waterglade Industrieparks in Grays, einer Stadt östlich von London, fährt selbst am helllichten Tag nur gelegentlich ein Fahrzeug. Die gigantischen Kühllagerhallen mit ihren Dutzenden Anlaufstellen für Lastwagen scheinen schon länger leer zu stehen. Hier bot sich am frühen Morgen des 23. Oktober 2019 ein schrecklicher Anblick: In einem Kühlcontainer fand die britische Polizei 39 Leichen.
