Once hired, students are assigned regular shifts throughout the current semester and are expected (and obligated) to abide by this work schedule until the last day of the exams period that semester.
If you absolutely cannot work your shifts during the exams period due to a scheduled final or a presentation that conflicts with your work schedule, please let the LSD Coordinator know as soon as possible. In such an event, you are expected to sign up on the substitution sheet to pick up the same number of hours of somebody else’s shifts to make up for all hours missed.
Keep in mind: Students are hired on a semester-by-semester basis and are not guaranteed employment in subsequent semesters. Factors that determine whether your employment will be continued at the Library Service Desk include but are not limited to:
your work performance in the current semester
your attendance in the current semester
the desk's scheduling needs
your own work availability
Intersessions
Students may work during intersessions (the periods between semesters) and holiday breaks but are not obligated to do so unless they have been hired specifically to cover these times.
During the fall and spring semesters, working during intersessions and breaks is voluntary. Keep in mind, however, that if you do sign up to work during an intersession or break, you are then obligated to show up for your shifts (you can’t voluntarily un-volunteer once you appear on the schedule). The library is almost always in need of students during intersessions and breaks, so any help you can give during such times will be met with much gratitude!
Holidays and Inclement Weather
If the library is closed, you have off from work. Students, unfortunately, do not get paid for shifts missed because of holidays or inclement weather.
For updates on delayed openings or closings due to inclement weather, you can either call the university’s inclement weather line at 404-727-1234 or check Emory’s website for notices (usually there’s an alert near the top of the homepage at www.emory.edu). For more information regarding Emory’s inclement weather policies, please visit http://policies.emory.edu/4.42.
