A GUIDE TO MICROGUIDES

Post date: Oct 19, 2017 7:29:27 PM

The microguides are in the Reference stacks to the left of the main spiral staircase, between the Reference books and the Census volumes. They are (as their name suggests) guides to collections we own on microfilm or microfiche.

There are two kinds of guides - Micfilm guides and Micfiche guides. (Microfilm and microfiche are different ways of presenting photographed and miniaturized books and articles.)

In the call number, guides have the same number as the film or fiche they support. For example, the Old Bailey Proceedings are MICFILM 3155, and the guide to that microfilm collection is MICROGUIDE MICFILM 3155. If you know the number of the guide, you can find the film or fiche – and vice-versa.

Guides are shelved numerically, with Microfilm guides shelved first, followed by Microfiche guides.

To use a microguide, first CHECK THE MICROGUIDE

Most microguides include instructions on how to use the film or fiche collection.

Some collections have online information, so CHECK ONLINE

    • · Check in our online catalog (discoverE) for a possible online link.

    • · Check the library’s Research Guides

    • · Search the Internet.

      • Search by the name of the collection: e.g. Early American Imprint

      • Search by the name of the issuing body: e.g., South Carolina Historical Society

      • Search by the name of the company that produced the film or fiche
