Personal belongings and computer access policy

As the demand for our computer workstations has increased at this busy time of the semester, here is a reminder of the LC computer access policy:

1. Leaving personal belongings or books in front of an LC computer does not reserve the computer. Our computers are configured to log out automatically after 45 min of inactivity, which is plenty of time for a short break for someone using the computer. So, if a computer is logged out, it is considered to be available and anyone can use it regardless of the stuff left in front of it. Please advise patrons to move the stuff blocking the access aside and to proceed with using the computer. If you get a complaint that it is rude to move someone else's belongings, share this analogy—would it be rude to tow a car left on a busy street and blocking the traffic?

2. Sometimes students occupy the seat in front of an LC computer without using the computer. When there is a shortage of available computer workstations, please ask them to move so that those needing to use our computers can access them.
