1. Where are you currently living?

Providence, RI

2. What is the most important thing that you have learned in your writing experience, so far?

I write only after researching my subjects thoroughly. I am a scholar, a PhD, and have written several books, articles, and chapters in edited books. I also have spoken nationally and internationally about my scholarly research.

3. Tell us your insights on self-publish or use a publisher?

My other books have had publishers before I wrote them. This one was self-published & that was a mistake. Agents won’t touch a self-published book unless you’ve sold thousands of copies.

a. Who is the name of your publisher and in what city are they?

Book Daddy.

4. Any insights eBooks vs. print books and alternative vs. conventional publishing?

I think all books should be published as eBooks and also as print ons.

5. How many books have you written?

7, but all are long & very thoroughly researched. I’ve also done many, many articles in peer-reviewed journals.

6. Do you have any tricks or tips to help others become a better writer (please be as specific and information as you possibly can)?

Consider my blog at elainehaika.com/language. (I’m a Linguistics scholar & researcher.) BTW, you dogs goes to “my wife and me,” not “my wife and I.”

7. What makes your or any book stand out from the crowd?

The research, my close observations of the many dogs I’ve had all my life, the fact that the book is also a memoir, my using what they did and then verifying that in scientific research of dogs, the fact that I’ve experienced so many breeds, all with different personalities, and behaviors. And, the great illustrations. Oh, and that I present the science behind my conclusions in a casual narrative style, rather than in scholarly-ese.

8. What are some ways in which you promote your work?

My blogs, book fair, publicist services, speaking engagements, etc..

9. What is the one thing you would do differently now (concerning writing or editing or publishing or illustrating) and why?

I would have spent the extra time getting an agent or publisher, but I loved writing the book and wanted it to be read.

10. What would you like carved onto your tombstone? Or what saying or mantra do you live by?

Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. I want to be cremated when I die. I don’t want my kids spending a lot of money on burial costs. My youngest son died last April & it cost $12,000 to bury him and it’s costing another $3000 for his headstone.
