Good afternoon, families. This week's update is a little different as I felt we needed to do a reset in each of my classes today. While overall my students this year have turned out to be some of the sweetest people, the "honeymoon phase" has fully ended and we needed to revisit my classroom expectations. Additionally, a few students have been less than sweet, so I needed to take off yesterday in order to come back today and keep giving 100%. Today, I pulled up my first day slideshows and we went through all the rules and procedures again, discussing why each thing is important and how it helps the classroom run better/smoother. For most students, I think they understood, some perhaps for the first time, why teachers have some of the rules we do. I know that this one day will not magically fix all of the issues, but we will continue working to make these good habits permanent.
That being said, I've told the students that after the first warning, I can no longer continue giving them chance after chance to correct the behaviors without consequences, even if it is something minor. I truly want the best for all of my students, which includes trying to set them up for the best future possible. I worry about the long term ramifications if they do not recognize now when the consequences are minor as the consequences when they are adults will be much greater. Therefore moving forward, if students do not correct their behaviors after a warning, it will result in immediate parent/guardian contact and if that still doesn't correct the behaviors, they will receive an office referral from then on. I've rarely written referrals in the past, but now the rest of my students are missing out because of a few difficult students and that's unfair to them and I feel it violates their right to receive a proper education. I'm asking all my students' parents/guardians to help support this by speaking with your child about appropriate classroom behaviors in general now and then please work with me as a partner in your child's education if I have to contact you directly about something your child did or did not do as the case maybe.
While there's definitely more I can say, I have a lot to catch up on from being out just one day, so I'm going to wrap things up here. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
