First I'd like to thank all the folks who came out for Back-to-School Night on Thursday! It made for a long day for everyone, but it was great meeting everyone who could make it! If you were unable to make it, you can view my presentation here. As I mentioned during my presentation, I plan to start before and/or after school tutoring and tech help sessions this upcoming week; sessions will vary depending on what my schedule allows. You can check out the calendar page to see the addition of the new "Before/After School Tutoring & Tech Help" calendar. Dates and times for already scheduled sessions as well as any future sessions will be posted there. All students have been added to the calendar, so they can also view it from their own Google Calendar app via their Chromebooks. If any parents/guardians would like to be added to this calendar or their child's class calendar, feel free to send me a request via the email address(es) you'd like to have included; please include your child's name so I can ensure you are added to the correct block. Alternately, you can add it yourself using the appropriate link: Period 1/2 Math 7H, Period 5/6 MSM2, or Period 9/10 MSM2. Before jumping into the math of the week, I'd also like to encourage everyone to check out updates made to the school's website. As the school's web curator, I've been busy behind the scenes. I've set up a scoreboard page for our athletics and the PTA page is regularly updated with information the PTA president sends me. I welcome any feedback you have to offer and (if it doesn't conflict with county guidelines) I'm happy to make changes and additions to the site to make it as helpful as possible.
Now onto the math! I'll actually be making this portion short-and-sweet since laptop battery is getting a little low, but if folks have questions after, please feel free to contact me. The Math 7H class covered the real number system this past week, the first topic that is essentially new to them as the previous three topics have been covered in some form in the past. The real number system isn't a difficult topic by itself, but the way questions can be formed definitely add a layer of difficulty to the unit. Students should simplify numbers as much as possible in order to determine the smallest subset a number can be included. Some students also find it difficult to understand how a number can be counted as more than one type of number. To help with this, I use other examples to show that things can be considered more than one thing at a time (ex. all chihuahuas are dogs, but not all dogs are chihuahuas... all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares) and students generally have a little internal switch get flipped and they'll find it makes much more sense when put into that perspective. Once we'd wrapped up the real number system unit, the Math 7H class moved onto reviewing for their first test. The MSM2 class spent the first half of the week reviewing for their first test and also took the first county assessment quiz. There are a few kids who ran out of time to finish during class, so they'll be given an opportunity to finish first thing in class Monday.
Well, I better end things here for now before I lose the last of my battery power and I'm not able to post. As always, feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has a great week!
