Greetings folks! I'm going to keep this week's update a bit shorter since my weekend is pretty full with family plans, but if you have questions still after reading, please feel free to email me at anytime. Before jumping into this week's math, I'd like to thank everyone who made it out for this week's "Back-to-School Night" for coming to visit with all of us at EDMS. If you weren't able to make it out, as previously stated I welcome emails but I'd also like to encourage you to check out my class website as you'll find tons of resources including the Daily Agenda, where students start each class.
The honors class (my first class of the day) started the week with their first quiz of the year, overall with excellent results. No matter the students' scores, everyone is encouraged to complete corrections with an Error Analysis on all formative assessments; after we take our first summative assessment next week, students can use their Lambie Points to "buy" the chance at EA. The rest of the week was spent on the order of operations, wrapping up the week with their second quiz, again predominantly resulting in great scores.
The MSM2 classes had a bit more time covering integers at the beginning of the week before taking their first quiz on Wednesday. The results were mixed but as stated above, all students are encouraged to take advantage of the EA process to both improve their scores as well as their understanding of the topic. We wrapped the week up with work on the properties of real numbers. Since this is a much easier topic for the kids, I'm hoping to work in some extra review time for individuals and small groups on Monday for those kids still struggling with integers. For the most part the students know the rules/steps for solving integer problems, but the struggle some students are having is that they are mixing up which operations to apply those rules to (ex. trying to apply the rules for multiplying/dividing to adding/subtracting as well). No matter how the time works out on Monday, with the first test being scheduled for the end of next week, we'll spend the middle of the week reviewing for the test, focusing on integer work.
Well, I'm going to end things here for now. I'm off to watch my nieces' fall ball games and then take a family trip to the fair. I hope everyone has an equally enjoyable weekend!
