Before getting started with this week's class summary, I'd like to give a huge shout out to the whole cast and crew of this year's theatre production, Disney Lion King Jr.'s! I attended the show Friday night with my family and we all absolutely loved it! There is so much talent hidden amongst the students of EDMS and it's so wonderful whenever it gets a chance to shine. Congrats on an excellent show!!!
Now onto the slightly less entertaining subject of math. This week the 7H students wrapped up their work on composite figures. Some of the kids still struggled a bit with breaking the figures down into their individual shapes and the quiz results were not as good as I'd hoped. We completed a more extensive review before the test, which ultimately resulted in much better results across the board. The extra review time did necessitate modifying the plans a bit, so the students didn't finish the test until Friday. Students were told to complete the first assignment for the next unit (3-D models) on their own to help us catch up a little and to allow me to gauge how well students already understand the topic. We'll go over this tomorrow in class and see if plans need to be adjusted further.
The MSM2 students continued their work on geometric transformations, taking the quiz for it on Friday. The kids have done fairly well with the topic, though some are trying to take shortcuts by not showing their work. While translations and reflections are simple enough that students can normally complete those using the pictures provided, rotations and dilations are usually more difficult for students if they do not write the ordered pairs for the pre-image and performing the calculation to find the transformed image. They'll need to keep this in mind when in just over a week. Tomorrow in both MSM2 classes we'll be having a catch-up day; some of the kids need time to catch up on assignments for various reasons (mostly due to being out sick and/or the snow days) while I've noticed others need help getting organized to help them better manage the rest of the year. A catch-up day will help with that and those who are already completely on track can play (i.e. review) on some of the math sites we haven't had much time for recently.
