Good afternoon! With the year winding down, there's not too much to report. Grades are almost wrapped up at this point, though the kids have until midnight tonight for any final attempts at this terms graded work and extra credit. I'll do one final update on Monday morning for anything the kids did complete, so you'll be able to see the final grades by the afternoon, but I'm happy to report that every single student is passing my class for the year. I'm so proud of the kids who pushed themselves this week to turn their grades around to ensure they passed.
The kids were allowed and encouraged to work on things for other classes if they needed to improve their grades there as well. They otherwise were encouraged to do a final look over their math work to ensure they were satisfied with their grades and/or work on the Banzai math work after I was finally able to get the website unblocked. We wrapped up the week by watching how math has been applied in real life through the movie Hidden Figures, the biographical drama based on the lives of the NASA mathematicians Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. We'll finish the movie next week and continue exploring how math is used in rocketry through the movie October Sky, another biographical drama that takes place around the same time. It's centered around a group of high school boys who learn how to build a small rocket for a science fair, going on to win at the national level and earn scholarships for college; the main character, Homer Hickam, eventually becomes a NASA scientist.
We're down to just one more week, folks! I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
