Happy Holidays! I'm just as eager as the kids to head into winter break, so I'm going to keep things fairly quick and simple. The week wasn't overly exciting, that is of course aside from the general excitement everyone was feeling about the upcoming break. The first part of the week was spent wrapping up the previous quiz as needed and reviewing for the midterm test, which took place over Wednesday, Thursday, and for those who needed it, Friday. All kids who had finished the test were set to the task of working on any missing/incomplete assignments. To help with this, as part of my holiday present to students, I gave them a homework pass that they were able to immediately use on one of their missing assignments if they wanted. I also gave them 25 Lambie Points, which some students were able to combine with previously earned points to buy an additional homework pass. Both are things the kids can save and use at any point during the rest of this school year if they didn't want to spend them today.
Overall, many of the kids did a great job of wrapping things up for the most part, but there are still quite a few missing out there. For those students who are currently at risk of failing for the term (i.e. currently have a D/F for the term), I'm in the midst of sending emails to their parents/guardians with details on what those students can do to pull their grade up before the end of term. I wasn't able to knock all of these out today and my weekend is again booked with family plans, so I will try to get the rest of the emails out next week. Obviously I want everyone to have time to enjoy the break, but this is also the perfect opportunity to catch up on those assignments. I can't make promises for other teachers as I do not know all of their policies, but if students know there are things they can still do in their other classes, they should try to knock those out as well.
The students who had no missing work were given their new Code.org accounts to extend their Hour of Code and get a little more practice with coding since our end-of-the-year PBL project is based around coding. This is as long as we do not have a too snowy winter that negatively affects our school year and pacing. To learn a bit more about how coding and how it looks in my class, check out my Coding in Math Class page on my class website.
Well, that obviously got away from me again and became lengthier than I set out to type (as always), so I'm going to close things out here. I wish everyone very happy holidays, which I hope can be spent with the ones you love. I'll "see" you all again the new year!
