SOLs Covered: 6.MG.1 Area & Circumference of Circles
Math Unit: 12 Area & Circumference of Circles
Daily Agenda: March 24-28, 2025
Upcoming Assessments: SUM Quiz 12 Area & Circumference of Circles (Complete Mon. 4/7)
Greetings! As you can imagine, I'm just as eager to start my spring break as the kids, so I'm going to keep this a brief update as I still need to update grades before I can head out. We continued working on circles all of this week, reviewing the parts of a circle, which the kids got a preview of last year in 5th grade, and covering the relationship between circumference and diameter (C/d = π ≈ 3.14 or 22/7) along with the formulas for calculating both circumference and area.
We also spent a bit of time identifying what keywords to look for in word problems that signal between the different calculations and how to breakdown a problem that has no obvious keywords (ex. we talked about how the dough for a pizza would be covering the pan and thus requires you to find the area). That's still a trickier part for the kids, so I encourage families to point out these things when the opportunities arise in real life. For example, if you take the kids up to a school to ride bikes on a track, point out that because their riding around the outside, you'd be working with perimeter/circumference while the field in the middle would be related to area.
We wrapped up the unit today with the quiz, but between student absences and some still needing to finish, I'd already planned on the day we return from break being a catchup day. Students who finished will be able to complete their second attempt with assistance as needed as well as try the extra credit opportunities that have already been posted.
That should cover the highlights but as always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
