Greetings! I'm feeling much better this week (thank you to those who sent their well wishes!), but I still have quit a bit to do before I can officially wrap up my work week, so I'm going to again try to keep this update on the short side. While it was a short week for the kids, it was still a full week for teachers, starting with conferences on Monday. Thank you to all those who came out to meet with us as well as those who reached out in other ways to check on the progress of their children.
While this was only the second week of the new term, we do already have grades in the gradebook and unfortunately several students already have missing work and thus grades that put them at risk of failing, so if folks could help support by check grades on ParentVUE and encouraging the kids to complete the work, it would be greatly appreciated. Students have been reminded of the tasks they need to complete, but one that isn't listed in the gradebook but is still a requirement of the school is the benchmark test the school has loaded onto ALEKS. I was able to get the closing date pushed to give a little more time but I can no longer give time in class and it needs to be completed prior to next week; for this reason, I've kept it open so students can complete it over the weekend, but it will close Sunday night at midnight.
In regards to our regular math class work outside of ALEKS, we continued our review of adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and I feel that most of the students have a better overall understanding and that even those who still struggle a bit have gained a stronger foundation with fractions. Every kids "sees" fractions differently, so while I reviewed how to work problems with different types of models, using the multiplication chart, and with the more traditional algorithm, I for the most part allow them to pick their preferred method when working independently. We got a little bit of a start on multiplying fractions today, but we seemed to constantly be interrupted throughout all blocks today and didn't get very far, but we'll be picking it back up again first thing Monday morning.
This updated went a little longer than I initially set out to write, but it should cover everything for now. As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
