Another week down and one more to go in the second term and first semester! Before getting into the details of the week, I'd just like to remind everyone that there are things every student can do to improve upon their current grade (see last week's update). This now includes one final extra credit opportunity on Khan Academy (students access this through the Backpack on their CCPS dashboard). This was added earlier this past week when I was making further adjustments to the plans due to the recent snow days. We wouldn't have had the time to do the assigned practice sections as a regular assignment as I'd previously planned, but I felt the review was still important and thus gave the kids the added incentive of earning a few more extra credit points for completing it. Please again help me by encouraging the kids to take advantage of this opportunity. Now, onto the regular weekly happenings in each class.
There isn't a lot to cover for the honors class as they spent the week testing, first the final unit test of the term during the first half of the week followed by the county benchmark test during the last part. We'll get started on the final unit of the term on Monday, which will have its own quiz but no test as it's one of our first strictly high school level topics. The MSM2 classes continued their work on consumer applications, wrapping up the week with a quiz. A good portion of the kids are still working on the quiz as I'd warned they need to take their time on it; the topic is heavy on word problems and rushing through generally leads to big mistakes, which the kids who did rush through found out the hard way. The smallest details can make the biggest difference (ex. change in wording could mean you're finding just the tax amount versus the total with tax). The kids will all have time to finish the quiz, but there is also the final unit test and the benchmark test to take this week. Students will need to work carefully through these as well as they'll be just as heavy on the word problems. The Khan Academy extra credit previously mentioned will help students prepare for these in addition to helping improve their grades. Again, please encourage the kids to take advantage of this opportunity and to study for these upcoming tests.
Well, I'm going to wrap things up here but as always, please feel free to email at anytime with questions. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
