Howdy! This will likely be another speedy update since I've got my niece again and this time she's brought a friend. We wrapped up our work on the real number system before taking the quiz and the end of the week saw us covering the beginnings of powers of ten and scientific notation, which we will continue covering next week.
More importantly this week, I've also covered some life skills in addition to our math skills. With grades being fully updated for Units 1-2 (aside from math notebooks) and with two quizzes done, we talked about staying ahead of our assignments and not letting things pile up. We've talked about utilizing the points we've been given (Lambie and Liberty Points) to take care of the assignments we didn't complete on time (paying the "late fee" using either point system). We've talked about taking advantage of the chance to do corrections on our quizzes both to learn from the mistakes we made as well as to improve our grades. We talked about making better choices in how we use our class time, focusing on work rather than socializing and even asking for a seat change if we realize we chose poorly on the first day. Right now I'm giving them the chance to make these choices on their own and I've been really proud of the kids who have made those choices for themselves. Next week I'll start having mini conferences with the kids if I've found they haven't made better choices. Some might not realize they've made less than ideal choices (it's the nature of middle schoolers), so I'm hoping a direct discussion will get them to self-analyze and reflect, pushing them in the right direction. If all else fails, I'll push them along with some extra time catching up during lunch.
In case you're worried about math notebook grades, please don't be! I can only grade math notebooks in class when I have "free time," which there hasn't been much of recently. Generally I can knock them out on quiz days, but I've had other odds and ends to take care of during the quizzes that have kept me from finishing. I'm about halfway through the bunch, so kids who have already had notebooks checked still have a chance to finish the missing/incomplete pages without having to "pay the late fee." It just wouldn't be fair to mark them as missing/incomplete or charge for being late when some kids are getting extra time to finish just because I haven't gotten around to them yet.
Well, I'm hoping this makes sense since I've had two 11 year olds talking my ear off the whole time. If anything is unclear or you have questions about anything, please feel free to email. I hope everyone enjoys what's looking like a beautiful weekend!
