Howdy! It's been another busy week of SOL review in class. I had to pick up the pace on our work to ensure we can get through everything by the end of next week. We knocked out two more strands (#2 computation and estimation and #3 measurement and geometry) along with their accompanying quizzes then started on the fourth (#4 probability and statistics) by the end of each block today. Since it's a shorter strand, we'll be taking that quiz on Monday after we go over any questions the kids might have. I'll have an answer key posted this afternoon before I leave for the fourth packet so students can use it to review this weekend and be ready to ask any questions on Monday (all keys posted here). The rest of next week will be spent on the final strand (#5 patterns, functions, and algebra), which is also the biggest and will have the most questions of our mini-SOL quizzes. It's expected that this strand will also be the biggest on the kids' actual SOL test, so the "overtime" we put into our work this week will pay off next week by giving us more time to focus on this big area. I'm hoping we might be able to finish it by Thursday, leaving Friday for any final review and questions the kids might have. Once I start administering the math SOL tests on Monday, I will be extremely limited on the types of questions I can answer. Generally speaking, I will most likely only be able to refer the kids where to look in my resources, we've got so many things to pull from that I can easily point the kids in the right direction if they do have questions after next Friday.
In addition to the review packets, the kids are expected to have completed a total of 3 hours on Khan Academy by the end of next week (ending Fri. 5/10). When we started last week I told the kids they should try to knock out an hour each week but that their grade would be for their combined time. This is to allow students a little wiggle room when planning if one of the three weeks was going to be busier for them than usual. With various music field trips, sports, recitals, etc. taking up a lot of the kids outside time this time of year, I know some nights can be a little more packed than others, so between regular class time, SOAR time, and non-school time, as long as they've been practicing on Khan Academy, they should easily be able to earn their 30 total points (10 points per hour).
Well, I think that should cover everything but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has an excellent weekend!
