Happy Friday, folks! So today was slightly unexpected as I was fully prepared to be virtually teaching from home today (or trying at least, technology/power willing). I hope you've all been able to stay safe and warm and will continue to do so since there's another round of ice coming through tonight.
We started the week by wrapping up our work on ratios, rates, and proportions before the kids took the quiz on Tuesday. For this quiz, I had the idea to adjust the settings a little to allow for an automatic retake. Many of the kids seemed to love the idea, especially those who are nervous test-takers and get questions wrong due to little mistakes as a result of second guessing themselves. This brought down the nerves and allowed many to do better the first go-round and most did even better with the second attempt. Sadly, I'm still waiting on a few kids yet again to take the quiz, so I again ask parents and guardians to help me by asking those kids to take care of it. I'd also like to ask all parents/guardians to check with their child to see if they took advantage of the retake opportunity. Quiz corrections for questions that are wrong even after the second attempt are still of course encouraged. The retake has also been added to the first quiz we took on this quarter's grades (2.04).
On Wednesday, we had our first "catch-up day" of the quarter. For the students who owed work, we stayed in the class meet and I was available to answer any questions as well as providing tech support. For those kids who were already all caught up on work, I opened up my office hours meet so they could get a little of the social time that has been drastically decreased in the virtual setting; they were able to chat and even play games (I have a slideshow with virtual game boards if anyone wants to check it out). Thursday saw us starting our next unit, consumer application (AKA money math), which is one of my favorite units but also the one I think is the most important since no matter what path the students' lives take, they'll all have to deal with money. We'll be continuing our work on this unit throughout next week and a half.
Well, my warm little nest on the sofa is calling me (the kids can probably tell you how Ms. Lambert is not a fan of the cold... they can sometimes hear my space heater running during the live classes and they almost always find me sporting a hat), so I'm going to wrap this up here. As always, let me know if you have any questions. Hope you're all able to have a safe, warm, and happy weekend!
