Good morning! This update is coming early since I'm out for an appointment tomorrow and I have a meeting right after school today. Between it already being a short week, lots of kids already out, and my own absences tomorrow, there's not much to add. We did/will be covering the affect negative coefficients have on inequalities, which students then practiced on their own for the rest of class.
When multiplying or dividing BY a negative when solving an algebraic inequality, the inequality symbol flips (i.e. a less than would flip into a greater than, greater into less, etc.); this doesn't apply if the first number (the multiplicand or the dividend) is negative, just the second number (the multiplier or the divisor). Kids will likely mix up when it gets flipped, so I always remind students to check not just the solution (same as when we solve an equation), but to also check the numbers on both sides of the solved value to ensure we get the direction for our arrow for the inequality graph correct as well as correctly identifying possible values for the solution set (inequalities can have an infinite number of solutions).
We'll continue practice this soon upon our return from fall break, but our first days back will see us completing the winter MAP test for the school. Students will have time to catch up on work tomorrow but will also have a review activity to work on during class. While I'll be out, my coteacher Ms. Randall will still be here to support the students along with a substitute teacher. Students can also email me if they have any questions, though a response will most likely have to wait for our return from break.
That should cover everything and I still need to make the latest anchor chart poster that I promised the kids, so I'll wrap this up here. As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions, though again I warn a response will likely have to wait for our return and I thank you for your patience. I hope everyone has an amazing week and to those who celebrate, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving!
