Greetings! I've got a bunch of stuff to do this afternoon before I can head out for the weekend, so this will be a super fast update... for real this time! I know I've said that before and then written an essay, but I mean it this time. We moved onto working on word problems this week, specifically using the types of numbers we had been working on previously, rational numbers (i.e. anything that can be turned into a ratio/fraction). Word problems are difficult for most people, so we started off with conversations about some very basic problems to dissect how to break them down, including different strategies such as highlighting keywords and different methods that can be used to solve them such as the traditional algorithms or utilizing models, especially if we're unsure what operation might be required.
We progressed to more complex problems, still using those methods but also reviewing how to solve problems with integers, fractions, and decimals as well as steps for solving problems involving percents as we do not technically cover how to solve percent problems (ex. if something is 25% of a group, that's the same thing as a quarter of the group, so you can divide by four). I had the kids work some problems completely independently then followed up by going over the answers and walking through the process with them, giving alternative methods that could have been used to solve them. Since schools were closed on Thursday, I expected a lot of absences today, so I kept plans simple and had the kids reviewing with Blooket games to help prepare for Monday's summative assessment.
Well that should cover everything and only got a little longer than planned, so I'll wrap things up here. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
