Good afternoon! As you know, the third marking period ended yesterday, so I'm working on finalizing grades today. At this moment, most student's grades as seen on ParentVUE/StudentVUE are what you'll see on the report card. There are however a few who submitted a few final things here at the end that still need marking/updates, so grades for those students could go up, but no one's grade can go down at this point for my class. As you'll see further into the update, the kids have also started earning grades for the final term, so you'll already see postings for Marking Period 4, but you will likely need to switch over to this term on the ParentVUE gradebook page from the dropdown menu on the top right of the window.
In regards to this week's math happenings. We wrapped up our work with triangles and parallelograms at the beginning of the week, spending two days on word problems, focusing on the words that distinguish whether a question is asking about perimeter, area, or even both. Because this can be difficult for the kids as this is the first year they're working with area in math class, I allowed them to use the table we created for the words on their quiz along with the paper we used for the review on Wednesday. The quiz taken yesterday is the first grade for this final quarter along with this week's ALEKS grade. Additionally, students already have an extra credit opportunity for the 11th unit. Some students needed additionally time today to finish (which was predicted and a part of the reason the grade is going onto the last quarter to allow makeup time as well as retakes), but we still started working on our final geometry unit, area and circumference of circles, which also includes some investigation of circles and identifying their parts. We'll continue this unit next week and take the quiz for it before leaving for spring break.
Today during FLEX, I worked with a few students on calculating what grades they would need to maintain for this final term to get the grade they desire for the year, be it for my class or any of there others. I'm happy to help any of my other students do this as well, both because I want to encourage them to perform their best as well as because it shows them the real world application of solving equations (granted, multi-step equations, which are officially a Math 8 topic, thus why the kids will likely need a little help with calculating it). A heads up to families that if you aren't seeing what a student's semester 2 or final year grade are at the moment, you might want to reach out to that teacher and ask them about it as they likely forgot to set up their gradebook for those, the exception being the rotating elective classes as those are done a little differently as it's a different teacher each quarter.
That should cover everything but as always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
