Greetings! After returning to work this week, I've been working hard to catch back up on everything and make sure the kids are where they need to be. With MAP testing and ALEKS pretesting taking place the week I was out, we're thankfully not too far behind where I'd planned for us to be at this point in class. Monday and part of Tuesday of this week were used as catch-up days for both the kids and myself. Most of the kids used the time wisely and between the in-class makeup days and their homework time at home, most students were all caught up on their Unit 1 & 2 assignments. However all hope is not lost for those with missing or incomplete assignments; please refer to my email on Tues. 9/25 for additional details on how students can still turn in these assignments without academic penalty. I still have to record grades in Synergy (aka StudentVUE/ParentVUE) for the digital assignments, but students have already received their individual grades on Google Classroom for these assignments.
The rest of the week was spent learning about the real number system. If any of your kids have been asking for Nutella (or even possibly a pet iguana) this week, it might be because of the mnemonic I use to help the kids remember the order of the subset of the real number system: Raising Racing Iguanas With Nutella Inside - Real, Rational (Integer Whole Natural) & Irrational. It's a phrase my students and I came up with my first year at EDMS (they were bizarrely obsessed with Nutella that year) and it definitely seems to stick with the kids, so I've continued using it along with my Russian nesting doll to explain the nested Venn diagram that is used to illustrate the relationship among the subsets.
The kids will be taking the quiz on this unit tomorrow (Mon. 10/1) after we review at the beginning of the block. I'll finish inputting the Unit 2 grades and start those for Unit 3 that is officially wrapping up tomorrow. I'll still be accepting work for Unit 3 without penalty through Thursday (10/4), but after that students will need to spend their points to turn in any remaining late work.
As always, thank you for your continued support and involvement and most especially for your patience and understanding these past two weeks while I was out and then as I've worked to get back into the swing of things this week. The kids have been amazing this week and made returning to work much easier; if you'd like to take a peek at one of the lighthearted moments of the week, check out my last post on my teacher Instagram or Twitter accounts to see how my 4th block wanted to spend their brain break. If any of you have any questions, please feel free to email at any time. Hope you all have have an amazing week!
