Greetings! First, I'd like to wish all my fellow teachers a "Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!" I hope you've all had an amazing week! I know I certainly have and I have to thank my school, our PTA, and my kids and their families for making it so wonderful. The food and gifts have certainly been very much appreciated, but some of the cards, notes, and comments from some of the kids have almost brought me to tears a couple times. I'd also like to wish all the nurses out their a "Happy National Nurses Week!" With a cousin who's a nurse and a niece who will be heading off to college to study nursing, I've always had so much respect for what all nurses do but this past year has truly shown the world how amazing you really are! Thank you for all you do!
We started the week by wrapping up our final new topic of the year, geometric transformations. The students were introduced to dilations and then moved onto completing multiple transformations before taking the quiz on Wednesday. There are still a high number of students who haven't completed this quiz (along with a handful who haven't completed earlier quizzes from this term), so I encourage all the kids to get caught up over the weekend.
The second half of the week was spent by beginning our SOL review. There were both cheers and groans - cheers because it's a sign we're getting closer to the end of the school year and groans because... well, it's for the SOLs. With some kids opting out of the test this year, there have of course been questions as to whether they need to complete the review. The answer to that is yes since it's all the stuff they need to know for the year and it's forming the foundation for their future math learning. The only grades I'll be taking for our SOL review will be for the "SOL mini-quizzes" we'll complete after each section and will take place every couple of days. Between each quiz, we're working on digital review packets I compiled from some Henrico county resources. I know many find it easier to do math work on paper so since I'm not grading the work and thus wouldn't need to worry about collecting it, I've offered paper copies to anyone who wants them. I just ask that virtual students give me notice that they want to pick up their copies so I have time to both print the copies and get them down to the office for pick-up. Students can of course print their own copies from the SOL review folder, but since it's quite a few pages (58 to be exact, so really it's pretty much a full workbook) I can save you the paper and ink/toner. We'll be taking the first quiz on Monday, so I encourage the kids to review everything we did this week and to go back and look over their old notes and work.
Well that should pretty much cover it and since I know they're calling for rain this afternoon, I'm going to wrap things up now so I can get out before it starts. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope you all have an amazing weekend!
