And that's a wrap! It seems like the week just flew by and now the kids are all officially 8th graders, ready to enter their final year in middle school! I'm so proud of how far the kids have come this year and I can't wait to hear from them later to learn what their future holds. Just because this was the last week, doesn't mean we didn't continue the math but hopefully it was in a way that the kids could appreciate how great the subject is outside of the classroom setting.
We started the week by wrapping up the movie October Sky that I mentioned in the last update. We then moved onto checking out American Ninja Warrior before designing our own obstacles, highlighting the math that would be needed to design the obstacle or even how the math could make the obstacle harder for the contestant (ex. a ramp might require the use of the Pythagorean theorem). The kids seemed to enjoy the show and activity and I later tweeted a few of their designs. That tweet got a response from one of the show's hosts and the show's official account as well, so the kids interest went up exponentially the next day! The show actually encouraged the kids to get their parents to enter some of their designs into their contest; I've been told that a student's design actually won last season, so it wouldn't hurt to try!
We moved onto a "student's choice" day of activities, my favorite being origami. It's something I enjoy, but it also utilizes and/or shows many of our geometry concepts. Even though it's something I enjoy, I was very pleasantly surprised with how much some of the kids got into the activity, so much so that they were apparently continuing the work throughout some of their other classes. One student even told me that she went out after school that first day and got more paper just to continue making pieces.
On Thursday we had our 7th grade awards assembly which was followed later by yearbook signing out on the bus loop and a pizza/movie party back inside. Thank you again to all the people who helped with the pizza party by sending in donations! The entire 7th grade team greatly appreciate it. The kids worked hard all year, so I continued the movie into today, though two of my classes chose to watch Hidden Figures, so there was still plenty of math thrown into the day. The day ended with the traditional goodbyes on the bus loop, with all the teachers standing along the sidewalk, waving as the buses rolled out.
Again, I'm so proud of the kids and I feel privileged to have taught them all this year. Even so, I'm very much looking forward to the summer break. I hope everyone has a great summer and I wish you all great success in the future!
