Howdy! We're another week closer to winter break! I don't know about you, but I'm certainly ready for a little downtime with my family, especially now that the oldest has just gotten back from her first semester away at college. We do still need to work our way through next week though before we get to that much deserved break, but for now, let's carry on with this week's math happenings.
The week started with a review of our relations and functions unit in order to prepare for our quiz. I gave the kids a few extra tricks and reviewed those covered last week. The kids took the quiz on Tuesday and finished up on Wednesday as needed. Overall the results were great, but I encourage those students who maybe struggled a little more to check-in with me to clear up any lingering confusion and then do their second attempt. On Wednesday after quizzes were finished, the kids were given time to participate in the Hour of Code in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. I set up accounts for all the kids through Code.org, which is where we'll do our coding project in the spring after SOL testing, but the kids were allowed to choose from any of the programs on the Hour of Code site. Students who shared their projects with me, either with a direct link or with a screenshot submitted through the Canvas module received 10 formative extra credit points. While this was officially due today, they can continue working on it and still earn those extra credit points through January 10th, though some of the Hour of Code programs will no longer be available after this week.
Kids are also reminded that they have a summative extra credit opportunity on Canvas called the 12 Days of Mathmas. This is officially due on December 17th, but again will still be taken through January 10th. Please help me by encouraging the kids to take advantage of these extra credit opportunities. Again for those students who don't really need the points to improve their grades, they will earn Lambie Points for the completed work.
The rest of the week was spent starting our data analysis unit. Thursday we reviewed the various types of graphs they've learned in previous years while Friday was spent introducing scatterplots (aka scatter plots, scattergrams, scatter grams). It was mostly just a notes day and there is a video for the first section of notes and keys to go with both, so for the many students absent today, I ask that they go through those to stay on track with us. The Google Sheets assignment for today will be reviewed on Monday, but it's really just my own "techie" add-on in the hopes of giving the kids a few more tech skills of their own.
That should about cover everything, but please let me know if you have any questions. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
