Greetings! Well, we didn't end up returning to school on Tuesday like I thought, which forced us to change up plans even more than expected. Since the school had language arts slated for MAP testing on Wednesday and Thursday this past week, math wasn't allowed to take our MAP test those days. Seventh grade language arts apparently decided not to test on those days either, but we'd already rearranged plans and made our arrangements for testing next week instead along with rearranging the rest of our plans, so we're sticking with our newest plans. I've heard tell that there's call for snow next week as well, so we're already looking at how we might need to rearrange things in the future if that comes to pass, but it will all depend on if we end up missing again and for how long. Thankfully with the county's "Middle School Math" program, some of our topics are not SOL-tested this year for students and those are thus topics we can push to after SOL testing in the spring.
Aside from the snow days and the rearrangement of MAP testing, we were "back to normal" with work when we finally returned. This week we worked on ratios, rates, and unit as well as getting a start on proportions. These are topics that the kids have seen in various stages of their "math careers" in a variety of ways, so the kids have done fairly well so far. The proportions aspect can be a little trickier for kids, especially when you add in the now expected "SOL tricks" and word problems, so we'll be hitting that pretty hard on Tuesday and Wednesday next week and the planned quiz will now be a formative review assessment. I'm making this quiz open-notes, in part because of the reduced time, but also because they will have spent two days MAP testing in language arts at that point and will be following it with two more days of MAP testing in math.
I will not be holding a tutoring session next week, both for MAP testing as well as making parent/guardian phone calls and sending emails. Seventh grade is reaching out again to make sure that parents are aware of low grades specifically (D/F grades for the term and the semester), but we'd like to encourage all parents/guardians to login and check their child's grades on ParentVUE. I can't speak for other classes/teachers, but I know there are loads of things my students can do to pull their grades up, even for those not at risk of failing for the term. Anything listed as missing/incomplete can still be completed in my class as long as it's from this term. Students can also complete corrections for their quizzes and (if they have the Liberty or Lambie Points) they can "buy" the chance to correct their midterm test. All old work and corrections will be taken through January 31, no later. I will also post an extra credit opportunity next week that will be available Khan Academy through the last week of term.
As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions. All you snow-loving folks, please stop wishing for more! For all the non-snow-loving folks like me, try to stay warm if the others get their wish!
