Howdy, Ravens! I hope everyone is doing well and is able to enjoy what will hopefully shape up to be a pretty day! Today marks the conclusion of our final new topic for the year, geometric transformations. We'll spend next week working on our final "project" of the year, our math art galleries that will have the students looking for the math in the world around them, searching for both the obvious and not so obvious ways it applies in our daily lives, even if we aren't "solving a problem" as most students have come to expect with school math. We'll "go" on a few virtual field trips during our live class sessions and I'm asking the kids to submit this Google Form to let me know which places they most want to visit. I'd love to encourage everyone to check out the list of virtual field trips if you're looking for something to do while still on quarantine. There are a variety of places you can "visit" and while it's definitely like seeing those things in person, they're still pretty awesome.
As previously mentioned, next week will mark the end of teacher-created materials and the county will be providing the resources for June 1st-12th. They still haven't given teachers access to those things yet, but I will definitely still provide my regular live class sessions every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 9:30AM all the way through June 11th in case students still need help. I've reached out to the other math teachers to see if they're willing to continue with our "Math Monday" 7th grade group through June 8th, so I'll update the 7th grade page and include that in a future update once I've heard from them. I'd previously stated that we'd hold the sessions through Math 25th, but that was before I realized that was Memorial Day (that realization happened only yesterday after my sister said something about it), so there will not be any sessions that day.
Finally, I wanted to let folks know that you have another option for getting in touch with me if you need it. I've set up a Google Voice account and you can now call or text me at the number I emailed (also now included in my email signature). It's web-based calling, so it's a little different than a normal phone call, but I've tested it out with my sister and already called to check in with a few folks and it seems to work fairly well. The county is asking that every family get called for a final check-in over those last two weeks of school, so you will hear either from myself or another EDMS teacher by June 12th and if you see that particular number pop up on your phone, it's me! I'll likely only answer or call during what would be considered normal business hours (9AM-5PM), but if you leave/send a message that a particular time works better for you, I'll try to accommodate. I'm no spring chicken though, so I'll leave the night owl hours to the kids.
That should about do for this week's update. As always, feel free to email, message, or now even call if you have any questions or I can help in anyway. I send you all my love and of course hope that you are all staying safe, happy, and healthy!
