Greetings, folks! Before jumping into this week's happenings, I would like to start by thanking all those who sent in supplies after my last email. It's been a huge help and so very much appreciated... some kids actually cheered over the new glue sticks! We're pretty good on notebook paper at the moment and though there are now pencils and glue sticks available, the kids definitely go through them quickly, so I would never turn down more of those.
This past week the 7H and MSM2 classes were back to working on the same topic at the same time, so everyone was covering the Pythagorean theorem. This is a strictly Math 8 SOL, meaning the 7H students will find it on their SOL test in the spring while the MSM2 students will not. Because of this, the MSM2 students will have an open notes quiz for this topic on Monday (just as the 7H did for their Algebra I topic of polynomials), so I highly encourage the kids to make sure they have their notebooks completely updated and to be sure they back them up into their backpacks tonight when they are preparing for school tomorrow; an open notes test won't be any easier if you don't have your notes!
In reality, I have faith that most students will do just fine without their notes as they've done a great job this week, but some are intimidated by the fact that it's an 8th grade topic and there are always others with test anxiety that gets the best of them on assessment days, so the open notes aspect is a little bit of a security blanket for them. As with most topics, all the kids do need to work a little more carefully through word problems and while drawing pictures is a good strategy for many types of problems, it's an even more important strategy for anything geometry related. The few struggles students from any of the classes encountered during the week mostly revolved around messing up word problems because the student visualized the shape wrong, which usually could have been avoided if they'd drawn a picture and labeled everything. The 7H class took their quiz on Friday while the MSM2 classes will be taking it tomorrow.
I'm going to close things out here but as always, please feel free to email anytime if you have any questions. Again, many thanks to all those who sent supplies in this week. I hope everyone has a great week!
