Hello again! I'm just as eager to start my spring break as the kids, so this will be a super quick update... seriously!
Today was the last day to turn in assignments and assessments (including corrections) from before this week and for the most part I've got all of those grades in already with the exception of the digital assignments for the last two units (Units 22-23) in my Math 7H class (I'll be working on those over spring break). I will accept the assignments and assessments (including corrections) for this week's work (anything with an end date in the grade book from this week), but only on that first day back.
Additionally, the kids have their Math Art Gallery projects (MSM2 version; 7H version) due the day we return. The project was started over a month ago and we've been adding to it with each unit (students should be sure they've added all the updates found in the above linked templates). I spent some time today in each class reviewing the expectations one last time and showing them some new examples to help give some new ideas. I don't generally have assignments over breaks, but I decided to push the due date for this until after the break for this to allow them to add some potentially really awesome pictures if they go on any fun trips/vacations over the break. I know for a lot of middle school projects, teachers encourage that all the work be done 100% by the kids, but please feel free to help the kids on this one a little. Now that doesn't mean I'm giving parents/guardians a project or that the kids can sit back and relax will someone does it for them, but I think the kids can use the extra push to look past the obvious examples to get some really great pictures. I've been pointing things out as we walk through the halls or just around the classroom (the tiles on the floor are both squares {quadrilateral unit in MSM2} and translations of each other {geometric transformations unit in all classes}). The whole point of this project is to get the kids looking for the math around them, specifically the geometry we've covered this term. Time permitting after SOLs and prior to Chromebook collection, I'm hoping we can add to it to further expand their mathematical horizons to see how math is part of their everyday lives in more ways than they realize.
Finally, as promised an extra credit opportunity was posted earlier this week and will be open until Wednesday, April 11. It's not an all-or-nothing assignment, so students will get credit for each individual piece they complete, but the average has to be a 70% or higher. Kids can retry until they hit that 70% and they are encouraged to view the help videos on Khan Academy if they need some review.
Well, that ended up a lot longer than I set out to type but again, I'm sure most of you are used to that by now. As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions, though be forewarned that I will not be quite as connected and speedy with my responses as I am usually. I hope everyone has a great Easter and an awesome spring break!
