Howdy! As you know, it's been a super short school week, but it has still somehow felt like a full one. The kids were full of extra energy, but that's usually the norm before a break so I was expecting it, but it still leaves me one super tired teacher, so this week will be a speedy update (I promise I'm sticking to that this time, I swear!).
The week has mostly just been a repetition of how we ended last week, just talking about the basics of relations and what makes a relation a function. This involved a lot of emphasis on the vocabulary since I've found over the years that kids get the computation side of the topic just fine while their mistakes come from mixing up the vocab. The kids probably think I sound ridiculous, but I've been repeating the relating vocabulary a lot and we have a chart on the board to help as well. As a reminder, the x-values can be referred to as the input, independent variable, or the domain while the y-values can be referred to as the output, the dependent variable, or the range.
Today I gave a little sneak peak into the concepts of slope and the y-intercept, but I'm leaving the bulk of that work for after the break since attendance was lower this week and they would have likely forgotten it after five days out of school. We'll work on the rest of functions throughout next week and the quiz for the unit won't be until the week after on December 7th.
That should cover everything (I think I did a pretty good job of sticking to my promise!), but I want to close things out by saying how thankful I am to teach this group of kiddos! I won't sugarcoat things, this year has been just as tricky as last year when you consider we're still working through a pandemic, but these kids have been awesome! Thank you for raising such amazing kiddos!
