Greetings! I've got a bit of a headache today, so this update will be short and sweet. The honors class wrapped up their work with verbal translations and then they moved onto the order of operations, which the MSM2 classes spent the entire week studying. The MSM2 classes started the unit without a calculator to review some multi-step integer questions before moving onto more complex order of operations questions, for which they were excited to learn meant they were now allowed to calculators. By the end of the week they were all rocking their work and the quiz has resulted in the best scores we've had all year, with an average score of about 91%.
A very small part of this is due to them now being allowed to use calculators as some of the kids still at times struggle with basic computation skills learned earlier in their math education, so I've reminded them that they need to continue practicing these basics (basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; conversations and computation with fractions and decimals). An even larger part of this is due to my continued requirement that the kids show all their work on paper and get my "stamp of approval" for it before submitting their quizzes. There were fewer "hold outs" fighting this requirement this time as they are seeing the success of their classmates, so I'm hopeful that the remaining hold outs will jump on-board next week. Please help me with encouraging the kids to put forth that extra bit of work.
Well, I'm going to wrap things up here but as always, feel free to email with any questions. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
