Howdy! First, I'd like to apologize for sending this out even later than usual. It completely slipped my mind until bedtime last night that I'd forgotten to send this out. Hopefully I can stay more on top of this moving forward but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions.
Last week we continued working on consumer applications, though I often had to rearrange the order we were working and moving things around as we worked through the unit. This was in part due to the kids being so into the topic that we had a lot of really good discussions each day. As I mentioned to the kids many times and I believe in my last update, this topic is the most important one we cover throughout the year as it's the most relevant to everyone no matter what their future goals in life. I told them that I honestly haven't used some of the topics outside of teaching (our recent work on scatterplots and boxplots being one such topic), but I have to work with money on almost a daily basis. I believe the kids have a better understanding of consumer applications beyond just how to do the work but truly understanding why it's such an important topic. It was also fairly entertaining for me to hear comments like "that's why my parents never let me order the steak" or "that's why my mom wouldn't let me buy that" while they were working on some of the activities.
In addition to the summative quiz that the kids will be working on today, the unit also culminates in their "Stock Your Store!" Project, which we started wrapping up yesterday and will finalize today with their "shopping day." The kids will "shop" from their classmates stores and then "check out" by bringing their "receipts" to that classmate to have them check their work using the "cash registers" we set up last week. The kids have been really excited about this, so I anticipate some additional interesting conversations/comments as we wrap things up today.
Well, I hear the kids making their way down the hall, so I'll close things out here. As always, feel free to email with any questions. Hope you're all having a great week!
