We've made it to the final quarter, folks! While we can almost feel summer from here, but it's important that the kids buckle down and really hit the books as we start preparing for the upcoming SOL tests that start in a month for math classes (full schedule here on the school website). Many kids have hit a slump in productivity (from what I hear from the other teachers, it seems to be grade-wide), but I'm hoping that the kids will get their "second wind" academically as we finally get away from winter (Sweet Georgia, but I hope we're finally past winter!) and we'll finish the year strong. Please help me by encouraging the kids to work at a 100 for this final stretch of the year. We've only got two more units to cover in each class before we're 100% in SOL review mode (note, the MSM2 classes has two Math 8 topics to cover post-SOL). However, we've already gotten a head start with some small in-class review and taking the first of our SOL mini-quizzes (last Friday for 7H, pushed to Monday for MSM2). These mini-quizzes will help fine tune our review to target the weaker areas. I'm going to hang onto their quizzes to ensure they are not lost before I pass back the folders turned in at the beginning of the year, but if there are any parents/guardians wanting a copy of their child's quiz beforehand, just let me know and I'll get that to you ASAP.
Regarding our regular math work for the week, all the classes took the Spring MAP test Monday into Tuesday (a few a little longer as needed). The longer we're working with MAP (this is our first year with it), the more I'm learning about it and considering we made it through this final round without the tech issues we experienced the first time, I believe the data should be even more accurate and will also help guide our SOL review. We haven't gotten any emails from administration yet, but I assume it will be the same procedure as last time that parents interested in their child's score should reach out to their grade level administrator (that's Julie Smith for 7th grade) and she will print up the reports to be sent home, but feel free to reach out to me and I can forward your request.
The rest of the week was spent working on data analysis for the MSM2 classes while the 7H class reviewed then took their county post-test. The MSM2 classes have been doing well thus far, but some are struggling to differentiate the differences between a regular bar graph and their "new graph" of the year, histograms. We're continuing the unit this week, so we should be able to get completely past their confusion (mostly with the difference in bar widths, which is relatively small considering they get the harder aspects already) before the assessment on Thursday. The majority of the 7H class did an excellent job on the county post-test, but there are a handful that have become a bit disengaged and haven't had their focus on school work recently, which showed in their test score. Please help me with getting these kids refocused for this last stretch of school.
Well, I'm going to wrap things up here as the day is looking beautiful and the outdoors is calling my name! I hope everyone has enjoyed this beautiful weekend and that we have more days like this in our future. Have a great week, everyone!
