So we started this past week off with yet more snow, so we have needed to adapt and modify plans again, though it was a bit easier this time, especially since we were able to get back to school faster this time. Each class wrapped up the test they started at home over the snow day when we returned to school on Tuesday.
The 7H students then started working on geometric transformations, a topic they were introduced to in 6th grade. Their previous knowledge is built on in 7th grade by "upping" the work by performing more than one transformation on a shape at a time. So far the kids have done well with the topic, but they have struggled a bit with rotations, which I've always found to be the most difficult for students. I believe with the extra attention we gave rotations has helped the concept click for the students. We'll continue with transformations this week.
The MSM2 students started working on surface area and volume. They've worked with both regarding prisms in the past, but this is the first year they are finding surface area and volume of cylinders. Kids tend to struggle a bit with anything involving circles, which includes cylinders, but so far the kids have done well with the unit. The trickier stuff will come this week as we tackle word problems, the bane of any math student.
I'm going to close things out here since I've had a busy weekend, spending all of yesterday in a follow up to my Code.org training from this summer. I'm looking forward to the next opportunity we have to continue our coding work even more now. I hope everyone has a great week!
