Hello again! Before jumping into the nitty gritty of the week, I wanted to make sure folks took notice that I will not be holding my help session on the usual day this week. I'm heading to the GRCTM Conference to represent EDMS on Thursday evening, so I've bumped the help session to Wednesday. I've also told the kids that all previous assignments, including corrections for the most recent quiz, will be due by Wednesday, November 1st if they want credit since the term ends on the 3rd and I'll need the extra time to get all the grading finished by then. Also, Parent/Teacher Conference Day is coming up on November 6th from 10AM-6PM; conferences will run in 20-minute increments, which can be scheduled directly through any teachers you might want to meet with or by calling the school counseling department. Now onto the math.
This week everyone was working on evaluating expressions (AKA algebraic substitution), which is pretty much order of operations (last week's topic) with some algebra thrown into the mix. The algebra does make it a little more complicated, especially since there are some extra "tricks" with negatives that the kids wouldn't have dealt with last year. These tricks did trip up some of the kids when it came to the quiz (which was a formative assessment this time) later in the week, but most have already learned from those mistakes and have started (some even turned in) their corrections. Evaluating expressions wasn't the only topic covered by the MSM2 classes this week as we also did a bit with properties. For right now, it's pretty much just the basics as the more complicated stuff shows up when it gets mixed in with algebra next term, but the kids have done a great job with what we've covered thus far. There were a few "SOL tricks" we'd covered during the week that tripped a few kids up on the quiz, but most rocked even those questions.
The kids have a study guide on Power School that I've encourage them to get a start on this weekend, but we'll be going over it and any questions they might have on Monday. They also now have an extra credit opportunity available on Power School. I haven't had a chance to tell them yet since the site I've always used for extra credit assignments in the past and was hoping to use again this year still hasn't made it to the county's approved list. Since there's no telling when/if it will make it to the list, I've decided to go with making my own, this time through Power School. I'll make an announcement on Monday and throughout the week about the extra credit opportunity, but please pass it along sooner if you get this update over the weekend The kids will have all week to get it down and (since they'll ask) it will count towards the summative category and can only help their grade, not hurt it, so any missed questions won't count against them.
As always, please feel free to email with any questions. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
