Happy holidays!!! Before I go into this week's regular "math happenings," I wanted to make sure all parents are aware of several opportunities the kids have to improve upon their grades. Several have been asking if they have any work for over the break, specifically asking about ALEKS. The general response is "no" however that gave me the idea that the two weeks off could be used as additional opportunities to make up for missed or incomplete weeks of ALEKS. It is not required, but any student who completes one or both weeks of ALEKS while on break will have earned two replacement grades. This is in addition to the previously provided opportunity I mentioned a several weeks ago (see Week 12 update), so they'll have a total of three chances to replace them. For those students without any missing or incomplete weeks, I'll keep track and they can "bank" that extra time for the future in case they have a week they fall behind or when they might be extra busy and need the time to work on something else. In addition to this, students have the usual chance to complete quiz corrections to earn back half credit for each missed item as well as the chance to turn in any missing or incomplete formative assignment to earn up to full credit (provided they have Liberty or Lambie Points for the "late fee," anything after that is penalized 10%).
After a quick review of work on Monday for what was covered in each class last week (the basics of relations and functions in Periods 1&4; polynomials in Period 3), we moved on to new work on relations and functions for all classes the rest of the week. The kids have done really well with this topic thus far, which we'll continue in the new year. We'll obviously have to review a bit since I'm sure the kids will forget some of what was covered prior to break, but I had already planned on that being needed when I paced everything out several weeks ago. The trickiest parts have all been saved for after break, so I'm comfortable with where we've left off at this point.
As mentioned in my email yesterday, I planned for Friday to be another "Friday Fun Day!" to give students needing the extra time to catch up on assignments and as a reward for all those who have stayed on track. While munching on the rice krispy treats I'd promised the kids with holiday cartoons playing in the background, students either worked on knocking out some of their remaining assignments or played games with classmates. It was a great way to wrap up 2019 and while I'm more than eager and happy to rest up and spend some quality time with family and friends over the next two weeks, I can't wait to see the kids in 2020!
I'm eager to head out and start my break, so I'm going to wrap things up here. As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions, however responses will likely be much slower or even postponed until we return to school on January 6th. I hope everyone is able to enjoy some time with their own family and friends over the holidays. For those who are working to protect and keep the rest of us safe over that time, thank you so much for your dedication and service!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
