Greetings! This update is coming out a little later than usual, so I hope no one was eagerly waiting it. I wasn't feeling too great this weekend and I knew I'd have 2+ hours of the kids MAP testing this morning, so I figured it could wait until now to send/post.
The return to school after winter break saw us getting started on a new topic for the year, relations and functions. We reviewed for this right before break by covering the coordinate plane system in preparation for all the graphing we'll need to do with the unit. The first couple days of the unit predominately focus on the vocabulary, which will be very important throughout the unit. The kids have been doing well with the work thus far, but this week will start to get a little more complicated as we start solving and graphing functions. That being said, I have faith the kids will take to the work well since the work is more like algebraic substitution (which the kids did really well with overall) rather than solving equations. At this moment, I'm planning for the quiz to be on Friday, but we'll have to see how the week progresses, including this morning's MAP testing session that calls for an adjustment to our daily schedule.
Last week also saw to the closing of this term's extra credit assignment. I set up for another ALEKS session, this time up to 2 hours could earn a total of 20 extra credit points (10 summative and 10 formative assessment). I'll start adding that this week so students have a better idea of the extra work's overall impact. Some of my students also convinced me to add ALEKS as an additional Lambie Point opportunity; any additional time past the 2 hours will earn students Lambie Points, which I'll generally award at the end of each month. However, this month I'll look at results earlier for those students needing the extra points for turning in late work before the end of term.
Well, I'm going to close things out here but as always, feel free to email with any questions. I hope everyone's new year has been off to a great start!
