Greetings! It's been a busy week and I've still got one class left, so I'm going to try to make this post quick so I can actually get this out before the weekend. As previously mentioned, we wrapped up our consumer applications with not just a quiz this time but a fun shopping project. The kids were finally able to share their stores with each other for "shopping day" on Tuesday/Wednesday and they seemed to have a great time! The kids really got into their work and for many that's resulted in some awesome additions to their grades. Sadly for a few it's been a bit of a hit to their grades when I go to grade only to find they haven't turned in one or more parts. I'm still in the process of grading the digital components, but the papers have all been entered. If you check out ParentVUE and see that the grade is listed as missing or incomplete, please help me by pushing your child to take care of the work and get it turned into me as soon as possible. The same will go for the digital pieces as I finish grading those.
The quiz was either a hit or a miss for the kids, but for the majority the "misses" were not due to math errors so much as reading or attention errors. As I'd warned the kids while reviewing, they have to pay very close attention to what specific piece the questions asking (ex. some questions will only one the discount amount while others will want the sales price). They can do all the work completely right but get it wrong for a non-mathematical reason, but this is exactly what I've been trying to convey to the kids all this year. The kids can of course do corrections on this quiz as they can with all other assessments, but the PowerSchool review settings were messing up that day, so the kids will need to turn in their quiz papers for me to mark if they haven't already done so.
The rest of the week has been spent on probability and the kids seem to be greatly enjoying it as they get to play games as part of their work and they have the promise of a Skittles© activity next week. I sent an email about this on Wednesday, but I'll need either the permission letter or emailed permission by Monday (3/4) for each student to allow them to participate as I require for all food activities. Thank you to those who have sent in donations! It looks like we'll even have some extras, so I'm already planning ways we can use them for some SOL review activities a little later in the year. If you've already bought some to contribute but haven't had a chance to send them in, we'll definitely find a way to use them, but you might also be able to return them to the store for a refund.
At this point, the kids have gotten here for 4th block and their wrapping up their warm ups, so I'll need to close things out here. As always, feel free to email with any questions. Hope you all have a great weekend!
