Greetings! I'm going to keep this week's update quick since I'm one tired teacher today as this week has warn me out. A factor to that tiredness is that we were still without our regular projector most of the week as we waited on the county to send the replacement bulb, so I was left having to literally run back and forth from the jerry-rigged set up we had to use in place of our regular set up to the board as we worked throughout the week. Another factor to that tiredness is that by the second half of the day, we've been left feeling like we're working in a sauna as our classroom temperatures pushed into the 80s even with our windows open, making it hard to focus. Mrs. Lee also had to be out part of Thursday and Friday and while we had people in covering for her, it's just not the same as when she's here. For these reasons, I felt the kids needed a little extra time working with this unit before taking the assessment, so that's been pushed to Monday.
We spent Friday reviewing but instead of the more traditional review (which students do have loaded to Canvas along with a key to check their work), I came up with a game idea one night while watching an episode of Big Brother. On the show, the contestants were playing in a competition trying to "knock out bots" using a giant slingshot. The bots all had numbers on them and the player with the highest number one that round. That got me immediately thinking about how I could make that work in the classroom with this topic. After strolling through a few stores to see if I could come up with something to take the place of the giant slingshot (Five Below offered the winning solution!), I played around with the idea and talked it out the idea with Mrs. Lee and we came up with a game that the kids seemed to really enjoy for the day. Some were already asking when we could play again, so I've promised to try finding ways to incorporate it into future topics.
That should cover all the key points this week, but as always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. After the quiz grades go in, I'll also be reaching out about concerning grades, but if folks could help out by checking into ParentVUE and talking with students about missing work, that would be greatly appreciated. Have a great weekend!
