We're almost there, folks! We've only got one week left, but it will still a jam-packed one! We'll have regular class time most of the week, but the 7th grade awards and celebration will take place on Thursday. We'll start the day with the awards ceremony in the auditorium; if your child is receiving an award, you were sent an email (and possibly a ParentLink phone call from the school) to let you know. Parents and guardians wanting to take their children home after the awards will check out with one of the assigned teachers at the end of awards while the students who stay will move onto yearbook signing outside, weather permitting, after everyone has had a chance to return to the classroom to pickup their yearbooks and drop off their awards. Later during the lunch block, we'll have our pizza party celebration. Thank you so much for all the folks who have already signed up and dropped off or sent in the additional requested supplies for the party! It's not too late to sign up if you were interested, so please visit the SignUpGenius page to see what is still needed and to sign up. We request that all donations be dropped off or sent in by Tuesday, June 12th to allow for distribution among the classes and time to purchase any still needed supplies.
Regarding math class this week, we worked on coding through Thursday in all the classes. The honors class was able to finish the entire program and thus now have made their very first video game! They had additional time to work on the extra components (writing a backstory for their game, creating a survey for family and friends to rate their game, and creating cover art that encompasses everything). I'm still working on grading their projects since they had the additional pieces, but I've really enjoyed seeing their creative sides that you can't normally see in traditional math work.
The MSM2 classes didn't have quite enough time to finish all of their coding in class before Chromebook collection, but they did an excellent job with everything they did finish! Their grade was taken from the portion we completed together in class and thus will not be negatively affected by not having the final stages completed, but I have encouraged those who have access to their own laptops/computers and have an interest in coding to keep working on it. I'll be happy to help them on any pieces we didn't get to in class, even after the school year ends (though I'll be slower in responding to emails than I am during the school year), so please feel free to reach out if your child wanted to keep working on the project and gets stuck along the way. There are so many amazing opportunities within the field of computer science, so if I can help foster an interest for any of the kids, I'm more than happy to do my part to encourage them along the way!
Since Chromebooks were collected Friday morning and we've been so busy all year long, I gave the kids a break with a movie....though with the hidden agenda that there's math buried in the story along the way. We started watching October Sky, a movie based on a true story about a group of West Virginia boys working on a science fair project involving launching rockets after being inspired by the launch of Sputnik. Most of the boys in the group didn't see themselves as great students and struggled with even the basic math required to make the science work, but they persevered and made it past many obstacles to eventually win the science fair and earn themselves scholarships. The kids have been enjoying the movie (they all immediately assumed they wouldn't since I told them there was math and science in it!) and we'll wrap the movie up on Monday. I've got a few more fun things planned for next week that will hopefully continue to show them the fun side of math before the year ends and they all officially become 8th graders!
Well, as always I got a little long winded (but aren't you used to that by now?!), so I'll close things out here since I have to make it to my nephew's t-ball game soon. As always, please feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
