Happy St. Patrick's Day, folks! Well, it's been a bit of a rough week for me as I was out sick for the first three days and the two days I was there at the end of the week have me dragging still. I guess I was lucky to have held off the germs for as long as I did, but it was apparently too much to think I'd make it another school year without having to take a sick day (seriously, I never take off!). I think it hit me a little extra hard since I've been working a little too much overtime this year, so I'm going to attempt to keep this update short (I know I've said that often, but a nap is seriously calling my name right now!).
Thankfully even with me being out for 60% of the week, the kids were able to stay right on track with a ton of help from my awesome co-teacher, Mrs. DeLuccia, and my equally awesome team of fellow 7th grade math teachers! Mrs. DeLuccia stepped right up to not only teaching our shared 1st period, but she took over teaching my 2nd period as well. This is above and beyond the call of duty and I'm so incredibly grateful to her (you rock, MD....even if you are a UVA fan!). The kids did an awesome job on the unit and the results show in their quiz scores. Many did a better job of turning work in this time as well, so I'm going to continue doing the packets as long as time (and the copier that makes the packets) allows. We're still waiting on the county to update pacing for the final term, but I'm hoping not too much has changed and the math packets can continue for the final units of the year, but I've already got next unit's packets made, so that's at least one more all set to go.
Mrs. LaLiberte helped make sure my 7H class had everything they needed to keep moving and that awesome group of kids is so self-sufficient, they kept trucking along. They hit a couple of snags with the 3-D models since the substitute couldn't find the multilink blocks to help with visualizing, but once I was back and could share those with the kids as well as some of my own tricks to breaking a 3-D model down to it's 2-D views (think about it in more terms of rows and columns), they quickly got back on track. Since I was out for the start of the unit and they were missing the manipulatives during that time, I told them they'd be allowed to use the blocks on their quiz if they wanted and that helped ease their worries. I was able to create a math packet for this group as well for our next unit, so they'll get all of their papers for next week in one tidy little packet on Monday. It will be important that they bring the packet with them everyday as all of their paper work will be in it, but I'll have a few backups along with the digital copies available if necessary.
Well, that's not as short an update as I set out to type, but I guess that's nothing new. I'm going to close things out here but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. I hope everyone has a great weekend! Fingers crossed we can all catch another glimpse of warm, spring weather soon!
