Howdy, folks! I'm going to try to keep this week's update on the shorter side since I'm still catching up on chores that fell on the wayside this week since I haven't been feeling well. I'm still not feeling great (thankfully not the bug that seems to be making its rounds amongst the kids, just back problems). I plan to keep the scheduled after school help session on track this week, though it will likely be more of a make-up work time.
The honors class wrapped up their work on geometric transformations before taking the unit quiz. We then moved onto composite figures, which has been going well and will be continued during the first part of this upcoming week. In addition to the regular unit work, the kids have also started a small group project (the Flossville Town Park on Math by Design from Thinkport) that encompasses several of our geometry units. The project will be worked on in small parts throughout the coming weeks and will be wrapped up during our surface area and volume unit.
The MSM2 classes started the week with the first test of the term with mixed results. As I've stated in several updates, there are still some kids not taking the time to work out the problems completely, taking shortcuts that are detrimental to their results and thus their grades. There are also students (often the same) not completing the assignments by their due dates. While they're encouraged to still complete the assignments to help their overall grade, they are not getting all of the practice in before the assessments and it shows in their assessment results. I've explained to the kids that it's like not practicing for a sport before going out and playing a game; while you might get a few hits and a few good plays, you can't play your best game without preparing ahead of time. I ask parents and guardians to help with reinforcing this at home. I have seen noticeable improvements amongst many of the kids who have taken this idea to heart. After the test, the MSM2 students started the surface area and volume unit. We've just covered the basics thus far and will continue with the harder stuff (word problems and changing an attribute) this week, so the kids will really need to show that extra effort.
We are again out of pencils and we are starting to run low on glue sticks again, so if there's anyone who is willing and able to send in a few to help, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to go back to digital work in the MSM2 classes by the end of term and we won't be going through quite as much glue, but while we're working on geometry it's best to continue with paper copies. Thanks to all the folks who have helped us throughout the year!
Well, this ended up being a lot more than I set out to write, so I'm going to close things out here. Before signing off, I'd like to encourage folks to check out all the EDMS activity on Twitter. Mr. Maynes challenged the staff to use the social media site this past week and there have been some awesome posts from everyone. I've been on Twitter for a bit, but this challenge pushed me to become more active and I plan to continue. Check out the #EDMSravens hashtag along with the district's #oneCCPS. You don't need to have a Twitter account to view most of the posts, just click the previous links or check out the homepage for my class site.
Well, I hope everyone has a great week and enjoys the (mostly) great weather!
