Greetings! On top of this being a short week for the kids, the internet has been wonky this afternoon, so today's update will be on the short and sweet side. As mentioned in last week's update, we started the week with my Sweet Algebra! activity (thank you to my co-teacher, Ms. Randall, for helping fund this activity!). The kids did well with the activity overall, getting a better understanding of why equations work the way they do; this will aid our work next week when we move into more of the abstract, more "old school" methods of solving problems algebraically.
During the activity however we found that some students struggled with some rudimentary things like just knowing the difference between left and right. As a lefty who has needed to mentally reverse things my whole life, I can empathize as I sometimes have to take a moment and think about "true left" and "true right" (meaning instances when I don't need to flip things around mentally to make it work for a lefty). That being said, if you know your child still struggles with differentiating left from right, please help us by reviewing that with them when situations allow. There were also children who struggled with evenly distributing things; this skill can be improved with simple tasks like helping set the table for dinner (i.e. give them a stack of plates and silverware and have them distribute to each spot) or like portioning things out (ex. making goodie bags for an event or meal prepping).
Today we took a closer look at the algebraic properties, which will continue next week on Monday before we move onto those "old school" methods of solving equations.
That should cover everything but as always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
