Greetings! We just wrapped up our first spirit week of the year and while it was awesome, it was also high energy. Add in the fact that Halloween is this Sunday and the kids know they at least have a four-day weekend... well, that leaves this lady as one tired teacher, so I'm going to make this a speedy update (yes, I'm fully aware yet again that I've said that before, but I warned early on that I can get carried away with these updates!).
The week started off with a review of one- and two-step equations that included our first formative check grade of the term, which is our second grade of the term (the first being the regular weekly ALEKS work. Tuesday saw us taking the quiz for Units 8-10, which entails all of the basic review needed to start equations and those basic one- and two-step equations. The kids overall did well, but I still have a handful of kids who haven't completed one or more of these things. With only three grades currently in the gradebook, this means that those students current new term grade is very low, so please help me by checking out the grades on ParentVUE and encouraging the kids who are behind to get these things done.
The rest of the week was spent on just practicing two steps in the process of solving multi-step equations. I told the kids we wouldn't get to solving them until next week and we were breaking things down a little to make that easier. I likened it to practicing for a sport; for example if you were playing softball, you wouldn't go out and try to play a fullon scrimmage right off the bat, you'd maybe start with throwing to warm up and then move onto batting practice, slowly working your way up. For the equations, we started off with combining like terms before moving on to practicing with the distributive property. The kids have been doing well with both, but I recommend those who might be struggling some to continue writing things down and to also continue using markers or colored pencils to help break things down the way we've been doing in class. We'll wrap up this work on Wednesday, reviewing a bit since I'm sure they'll have forgotten that school even exists much less what equations are after a long, candy-filled weekend.
That should about do it and I only got slightly carried away with myself. As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any question. I hope everyone has an amazing weekend!
