We made it! Well, at least half way, but I still think that's pretty amazing considering how abnormal the year and I'm so proud of these kids and their hard work! At this point, grades for the first semester are set, so when you next log into ParentVUE/StudentVUE, the grades you see will be the grades for the report card. As previously mentioned, the grades for the unit we've been working on the past two short weeks are the first grades for Term 3, which can already be accessed on the PVUE/SVUE, just click on the dropdown menu in the top right corner of the grade book page and switch to "Marking Period 3." If you see that the grade is blank, the student has yet to turn the assignment in on Canvas (there have been two thus far) and if it's still not turned in by Monday, it will be marked as missing. I obviously want to try to keep all the kids on the right track with their work from the start, so please help me by encouraging the kids to get these finished before the weekend's over. Let's head into the second half of the year on the right foot!
In regards to math this week, we continued with our statistics work and students were introduced to box plots. Like most topics, I got the "when will we ever use this?" question and this is one that I can (and did) admit that they might not use outside of math class (I've only ever used it in teaching), but I won them over on the topic when I showed them how easy they are to work with and wound up with a few "this is way easier than I was expecting" comments by the time we wrapped them up. We reviewed yesterday for the quiz we'll take on Monday, but I've encouraged the students to continue with their review throughout the weekend (they've been provided with a few additional resources on top of everything we've covered to help with this) and I'll go over any questions before they head off to take their quiz on Monday.
This is a bit shorter than what you've gotten used to from me, but I'm going to wrap things up here so I can get back to modifying the assignments for our next couple units. As "techie" as I've always been, I'm still a "math person" and we like our paper assignments, so there's always a lot of editing required to fit this virtual environment. I know a few of my students have family members who are fellow teachers and I've heard from a few of the kids that they've shared some of the things we've done (like Blooket.com... the kids LOVE that site!), so before I close this out I'd like to share a Facebook group where teachers have been sharing auto-checking assignments - Mystery Pixel Art for Math & Science. Even if you don't teach math or science, I still encourage checking it out as there are some blank templates you can use to create your own assignment. Additionally, please feel free to email me and I can share a folder with blank templates (some of my own creation and others I've adapted or gathered from others).
Now I really will wrap things up since I've gone off on another tangent, but as always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I hope you all have an amazing weekend!
