We made it! The classroom is packed, grades have been sent, and we have a little over an hour left before we can officially say the 2015-2016 school year is over! We "took it easy" this week in math class, though the kids gave a few groans when they found that still entailed us doing math work all through the week. The kids wrapped up their American Ninja Warrior obstacle design before starting the much anticipated origami geometry activity. The kids who excel at the fine arts and those who are stronger in geometry (generally there are a decent number of students who fall into both categories) had a much easier time with the activity. All the kids, even those who had to concentrate a bit harder, seemed to greatly enjoy the activity, especially when they put the final piece together to form the 24-sided polyhedron (top piece in the image from my old class blog). A few kids have requested extra paper to create more origami pieces at home, so I hope they haven't driven parents and guardians crazy with stacks of paper. On Thursday we had our 7th grade awards ceremony during the first half of the day. I'm so proud of all my students and wish I could have given more awards, but alas I could only give two awards per class plus adding my vote for the three team Raven awards; to those students, congratulations on your many accomplishments throughout the year! Today the kids get to vote on the final activity, either an Extreme Couponing activity (consumer math) or one to go with Deal or No Deal (probability).
It's been an awesome year and I'm so proud of how hard the kids have worked this year! I would like to encourage everyone to work in a little academic review throughout the summer so they don't fall prey to the "summer slide" and will instead have an easier start to next school year. To help with that, I've set up "assignments" (not required, but that's who they are labeled) on TenMarks. There is something for every SOL (Math 8 for 7H and Math 7 for MSM2) available, though only through July 19th; at that point, the site archives all old classes to start preparing the site for the next school year. The other accounts I set up for the kids should remain available for the kids all summer long and present the work in a gaming format to make it a little more interesting. I won't delete the current accounts until I start setting up my new class the last week of August. There are loads of other sites on my class Portaportal that can be used without an account as well. I encourage the kids to save the links I've shared with them this year as many will still be useful next year. All of my materials will still be accessible through my site as well, so they can go back and review those at anytime. I'm happy to help any of the kids in the future as well if they need it (help finding resources, a little extra tutoring, high school recommendations), so feel free to email anytime. If you have questions over the summer don't hesitate to email, though I'm not quite as "connected" while we're out of school.
I wish everyone the very best with their future and I hope everyone has an awesome, safe summer!
