Upcoming Assessments: 4.02 Geometric Transformations Take-Home Quiz (Mon. 4/22)
Howdy! We've had another fun-filled week of geometry in math class. We wrapped up our work on surface area and volume on Monday in class, spending most of the time focusing on the notebook word problem pages. Since I wanted to spend more time focusing on that, I eliminated 22.14 as a required assignment and turned it into review (labeled as "material" on Google Classroom rather than a graded "assignment"). The kids were given a take-home quiz as well as some time in class to work on it. Sadly, it seems a lot of students came back from spring break lacking motivation to get their work completed as I still have a lot of missing quizzes and other assignments. I'd like to ask parents and guardians to review grades on ParentVUE and to help me by encouraging the kids to take care of their missing assignments. Being the last term, it's time to end things on a strong note rather than a negative one.
With some students already missing a lot of work and thus having the potential to run out of Liberty Points very soon, I've given four extra papers with the start of our final unit of the year, geometric transformations. The four optional assignments can earn the students Lambie Points, which can also be spent on turning in late work without penalty among a few other options (all listed here). The kids have been doing a great job with geometric transformations so far. The change in SOLs removed rotations (the trickiest for most kids to get a handle on), so we are left with only covering reflections, translations, and dilations. We'll wrap up this final unit on Monday with some review before I give the kids another take-home quiz on the topic. Please again help me by encouraging the kids to take care of their work that night.
We'll be launching straight into our SOL review work after that through the middle of May. The math test will be taken in math classes, so it's spread out over the week: 1st on Mon. 5/13, 2nd on Tues. 5/14, and 4th on Thurs. 5/16. The entire testing schedule can be found on our school website here for those who might want to try scheduling appointments around testing days/blocks. The honors kids do have a couple of high school math topics the county wants us to cover, but other than that, we'll finally get to do some of the fun stuff we can't work in before SOL testing, the big one being the coding PBL that has the kids making their own video game. While we can all see the beginnings of that light at the end of the tunnel, I again ask that everyone help me by pushing the kids to end the year strong rather than slacking off now.
That should cover everything but as always, feel free to email if you have any questions. Looks like tomorrow's weather will be pretty nasty, so I hope everyone stays safe and dry tomorrow and that everyone has an amazing weekend!
