Greetings! I don't have too much new information to add with this week's update as we've just been continuing the review I talked about in last week's update. I do however want to thank all the folks who have helped out by sending in tissues after Mrs. Lee emailed. With allergy season in full swing, we've been going through a lot and the school's supply has dwindled and the new order hasn't arrived yet. Additionally, thank you to all the folks who have returned the letters or replied to the emails regarding grade concerns. We still haven't heard back from several people, so I'd like to request that all parents and guardians do a check of ParentVUE to look at grades for all classes, not just our math class. We will also be making phone calls next week for those students who are still at risk of failing either for the term or the year as a whole, but I'm hoping the kids will take ownership of their grades by knocking the work out on their own. As we are quickly approaching the end of the year, the opportunity for students to improve their grades before we leave for the summer is diminishing quickly, so time is of the essence.
In regards to grades, we've used some of our time this week to give students an opportunity to make up missing work, redo assessments, and complete extra credit. Most of the students have been using this time wisely and have drastically improved their grades, especially after I did an extra lesson on outliers to show how just one zero for a missing assignment in the gradebook could severely pull down a grade. That has perhaps been one of the most impactful lessons of the year as some hadn't realized how this topic directly affects them until this point and I'll be asking if the county would consider moving that topic to the first marking period next year rather than saving it for the final. Either way, I'll definitely be addressing it with students as part of my back-to-school lessons in the future.
We'll be continuing our review next week, but I've been checking the work packets daily and I'm concerned as too many students haven't been returning completed packets the next day. These will be some of the final grades for the year, which will go into the gradebook starting May 9th and will be marked as missing as of May 12th, so please help me by encouraging the kids to stay on top of their review work.
That should cover the latest and greatest of our math land but as always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend!
