Upcoming Assessments: Math 6 SOL Test (Tues. 5/13)
Deadline: All grades for math class will close on Friday, 5/23 at midnight; items must be submitted prior to that
Greetings! We've officially made it to the other side of testing... at least most of us have. There are still several students who missed the first rounds of testing and thus have to make it up and a few others who will have to retake, but the majority of students have finished and are in the post-testing phase.
While scores will eventually be added to the Testing History page on StudentVUE/ParentVUE (PVUE), they don't appear to have been loaded yet, so I've added a column to the gradebook to share scores with students and their families. This is in a "Not for Grading" category, so it doesn't affect their overall grade. I prefer this method as it keeps their scores secure (no chance of them dropping a paper with it and others seeing, no chance of other kids overhearing) and students who have anxiety over it can wait until they get home where they are comfortable before looking up their score. To find the score, go into the PVUE grade book, click on Math 6, and look at the top entry. If you click on that entry, you can see a basic breakdown of what the scores mean.
At this time, the score cannot negatively affect a student's grade, I do however use the score to make adjustments to their scores to show growth using the high school's exam conversion guide, which essentially acts like extra credit. I stated "at this time" because the state just passed a law that would require that SOL scores count as 10% of a student's final grade starting the 2026-2027 school year for 7th grade and up, which is when this group of students will be 8th graders.
Some students and families will find a note for their grade stating that though their score is failing, they qualify for a chance to retake; to qualify, students have to already be passing the class and have scored between 375-399. Permission has to be given by their parents/guardians, but those students will start with remediation groups next week. The remediation groups will be run by some of the other math teachers while their classes will be distributed to the other math classes as we'll still be working on some post-testing activities with students who either passed or cannot retake the test.
Finally, I just want to remind everyone that grades will close for my class next Friday (May 23rd), so students have only a week to do what they can to improve their grades for my class. With student Chromebooks being collected the day before (see last week's update or the email updates from Dr. Hicks), students will have to ensure they've completed any final digital assignments prior to arriving to school next Thursday morning as they are collecting during elective/PE blocks from what I understand.
That should cover everything but as always, please feel free to email if you have any questions or concerns. Only 9 school days left! Have a great weekend!
